So... because I don't really know how this new limitation will work, lets run through some theoreticals:
1. I use points and pay taxes with my Amex card for a return jouney to NZ. I lose my bag somewhere.
- Am I covered by my Ace Insurance?
right now, yes.. If you purchase your tickets after June 15th, no.
However, you are covered if you used your *amex* points to purchase the ticket, or if you transferred your amex points to an partnered airlines and pay with those points.
If you paid using FF points you accrued normally (e.g. by flying), then no, you won't be covered anymore.
2. We drive for a weekend away and don't use the credit card (I use my Visa for example). We need some kind of assistance.
- Am I covered by my Ace Insurance?
Let me think of some more.... *ponders*
Answer: Right now yes... As long as you hold a valid amex card, you are covered everywhere you do.
From June 15th, no.
I never referred to it as "Ace Insurance". Amex has used various insurance companies in the past, including their own. So as far as I'm concerned, this is an amex insurance
Let me give you another example of what used to be covered, but won't be from June 15th.
Q: I travel overseas with a ticket purchased not using the amex. I stay in a hotel which was purchased with the amex. Am I covered?
A: right now yes. You are covered for your entire journey provided it's less than 6 months
From June 15th: no.
Bottom line, if you travel and unless you pay the full fare of the ticket with your amex, you will need to get travel insurance.
You can get a yearly travel insurance for around $400-$500 a year... So basically, the value of the card dropped by $4-500 from June 15th
