Chasing the Qantas 787

Yes, other 787-900 have been operating for several years ANZ since 2014. And I think several other 787-900 arrived in SYD that morning
There is no such thing as the 787-900. Boeing dropped the -x00 naming with the 747-8.
They are the 787-8, 787-9 and the coming 787-10.
Just as the 777 is going from -200 and -300 to -8 and -9 and the 737 is going from -800 to -8 MAX (etc)

True indeed !
Thanks for pointing out the correct nomenclature but would anyone care to point out the lack of a good review by those on board?

Still waiting for a proper in depth and critical review of the aircraft and cabin by those who attended. I guess I’ll have to wait until the hype dies down.

I have flown the 787-9, so it’s not new and wanted a perspective on the QF version. I had hoped that someone of the invited guests on board ZNA at least would see past the hype and the catering...

Like Jetstar's cabin? Gosh I hope not

Well the fuselage didn't get wider or the aisles narrower.

The difference to Jetstar is in the pitch (ie. Kneeroom), the IFE and the seat including headrest

While QF now have the a/c in SYD (hooray!) they will obviously try and rotate it through MEL and PER as much as possible and possibly BNE a little bit given the intention to base 4 there(but this may not happen during the next few months)

The plan is to bring the 789 to each major port for staff visits & 'open days' - MEL, BNE and PER all on the list, presume ADL too.

But indications from QF are that the domestic legs should see a daily roster of MEL-PER, PER-SYD and SYD-MEL weekdays; weekend activity uncertain and could be a little more sporadic.

I attended the 787 open day today and thought I’d share some observations and photos

Economy seats

Very comfortable and the seat pitch is good when the seat in front is not reclined. For reference I’ve shrunk to 5’10. The distance between middle of arm rest to middle of arm rest is 19”. Didn’t feel tight but the armrests are narrow

With the seat in front reclined not so good and I found the screen too close

The bulkhead seats have better legroom than on the A330 and I could quite comfortably stretch my legs

premium economy

Great seats but the pitch isn’t great. Very comfortable in the recline position

This is with the seat in front reclined and a 6ft 18 yo

The bulkhead rows have perhaps a couple of inches more pitch than economy but there is no foot rest like the other PE seats

One PE seat seemed to be already a bit broken and wouldn’t fully go back to upright

Business

Nothing really new here other than the privacy screen. I couldn’t find the button to adjust it so I’m not sure if this is fully down

Great pictures, pjm99au! Pitch looks tight in PY...
Yes I think the pitch will be a disappointment on a long flight. I have clarified the photo in PE to note it was with the seat in front reclined and with a 6ft 18 yo occupying the seat. No way of getting out of the middle or window PE seats without those in the aisle seats getting out

Seemed very comfortable in the z recline position and the 18 year old said he would be happy to fly to the US in PE

Slightly OT but I've flown AA's 77W SYD/LAX/SYD and was fortunate enough to sit in MCE. I took the opportunity to walk back and peak at the normal MC/Y cabin, and swore to myself I'd never be seen dead or alive back there!

I wonder how those seats stick up vs the QF AccountantLiner

Very informative post pjm99au. Thanks for sharing with pictures that really assist with putting the seat pitch and configuration into perspective.

This coming week.

It is still unknown about domestic routes with the dreamliner. Is it possible that we will not find this out? And by this I mean Qantas won't publish anything, and on some routes the dreamliner will be put on last minute, or a decision will be made the day prior etc.

It just doesn't seem like this information is going to be available and I assume familiarization flights will begin in the next few days.......
