Chasing the Qantas 787

It was not the only 787-900 flying into SYD this morning. Did I miss anything of note?

Although I’m sure If I got a free pass I would have provided gushing approval:D
It was a low pass over the harbour (west to east). Pretty cool considering the weather (could have been lower).

Not your standard approach (it actually tracked out through the heads and then back round to Hornsby to start its regular approach).

Does anyone at all know when Qantas may actually let us know about when the Dreamliner will be doing MEL-SYD and MEL-PER routes?

Well, given it is supposed to go into "service" on domestic routes from around 06NOV they'd want to firm it up pretty soon, though I suspect this will be one of those very fluid things.

The old info was:
QANTAS in a recent schedule update filed preliminary domestic service by its new Boeing 787-9, currently set to operate from 06NOV17. Between 06NOV17 and 14DEC17, the Dreamliner is scheduled to operate the following service.

Melbourne – Perth
MEL departure: QF775 Day x67, QF769 Day 7
PER departure: QF772 Day x67, QF776 Day 7

Melbourne – Sydney
MEL departure: QF442 Day 6, QF460 Day x67
SYD departure: QF439 Day 6, QF497 Day x67

At the time of booking, flight information continues to display Airbus A330-200 aircraft operating, however the seating configuration is J42Y194 (Premium Economy sold as Economy), instead of J28Y243.

The planned 787 operation remains subject to change.

[day 6 and 7 are Sat and Sun)

but I think this is well out of date (and AusBT agrees which is why they have not published anything further for awhile).

While QF now have the a/c in SYD (hooray!) they will obviously try and rotate it through MEL and PER as much as possible and possibly BNE a little bit given the intention to base 4 there(but this may not happen during the next few months).

I'd say this is going to change possibly daily depending on loads, where the AC is at in terms of crew training, any MX issues(you'd hope not!!) or anything else going on. Some of the above flights may well indeed hold but I wouldn't count on it at all.

I presume we'll know more in the next week or so.

Yeh you're probably right with regards to it depending on loads etc. It would be nice if there were two or three flights per weeks that were almost certain 789 flights so you can try it out domestically:(

When the opportunity arises, can someone measure middle of armrest to middle of armrest width in Y. There's enormous vaguery as to how seat width is measured but to me this is something that is easy to measure and provides a clear view of how much space a seat has.

Doesn't everyone carry a tape measure in their hand luggage???

Would have thought that the travelling journalists in VH-ZNA would have been more thorough with their review of their trip and checked this out. The important information about QF’s cabin design is still unknown.

I wouldn't. Certain websites protest too loudly they are focused on business travel and hence J until they are short of material.

I can only assume it would be the same as every other 3x3x3 787

Like Jetstar's cabin? Gosh I hope not.

So here we have a launch event and no journalist bothered to visit the largest cabin on the aircraft?

Perhaps someone from AFF should have been on board to do a proper review?

Yes, other 787-900 have been operating for several years ANZ since 2014. And I think several other 787-900 arrived in SYD that morning
Nothing new. But the journalists on board seemed to be so approving and accepting of the information fed to them about the aircraft rather than doing the journalist thing and be a bit more critical.

I didn’t get an invite. Is that why?o_O

I do agree that it’s better to not be early adopters of aircraft technology.
