Re: More photos

Two staff came to service my room today. They seem to work in pairs. I went out and left a VND20,000 tip by the TV. They didn't take it.

Is tipping not the done thing here?

I have no idea why I'm getting these "attached images" or how to get rid of them (not the one's above, they're supposed to be there).
To remove the extra attachment 'Edit Post' then 'Go Advanced'. One of the symbols on the top row looks like a paperclip with a down arrow. It is the manage attachments icon. Down the bottom are all the pictures used in the post. Click on the 'x' on each picture to remove it.

Uber, Burger, Uber

You are so kind Jess.

It was time to head to the Moose & Roo Smokehouse for dinner. It is next door to the American Club, but I went anyway!

I finally got to ride in an UberX today. The seven minute trip cost VND10,000 (A$0.59). I might be a cheapskate (OK, I am a cheapskate) but this is ridiculous. And it goes on my 28 Degrees MasterCard too. I gave him a 50% tip which he was reluctant to take, but I had my way.

This place had an excellent atmosphere as I was the only one there ;). Well I was a little early for dinner at 5pm. Five other people turned up a bit later, so I left .

I really enjoyed this place. Really comfortable seats and the staff were great. The boss came out to ask how the food was and we had a bit of a chat. The burger was great and the fries were amazing. There's more meat in that burger than your average Vietnamese family would eat in a week! The beer was served cold.

The food was VND165,000 (A$9.55)and two beers were VND80,000 (A$4.65) so about A$14 all up. I have photos, so it did happen.

The menu. Note the price of the Veggie Burger at the bottom. I had the Beef 'N' Bone Marrow Burger with Cheddar Cheese.

In case you can't read the menu, the Veggie Burger is VND999,000. Then it says Just kidding it's 155,000. I thought that was humourous.

Another view of how it looks after a few beers. It takes skill to get that slightly blurred look.

I had my first poor Uber experience for the return journey. UberX were on price surge again so I booked a Black. After seven minutes the bugger cancelled on me without moving. UberX were on 1.4X so I accepted it as tip included. Total cost VND13,000 (A$0.76) for an eight minute ride. Outrageous. Damn surge pricing .

Thank you.

While you're being so helpful Jess, is there a way to change the dictionary to English (real)? I hate arguing with the American one.

J can be better than F

I’ve had another win with flights. As I posted previously, a few days ago the SIN-KUL leg of a J SQ HAN-SIN-KUL booking changed from an A330-300 to A350-900. That made me happy as it will be my first A350 flight.

Today I noticed that the J seat map for the 3.5 hour HAN-SIN had changed from 2-2-2 to 1-2-1. I’m now on the latest SQ refurbed B777-200ER with four across flat bed seats and direct aisle access for all seats. Seat pitch is 76 inches and width is 30 inches.

According to SeatGuru, SQ have six versions of the B777-200 and only one of them has F. That F has 2-2-2 with flat bed seats and seat pitch of 60 inches and 21 inch width. I’m feeling lucky. J is better than F apparently. A lot better.

Breakfast at HGI Hanoi

Breakfast is OK here at the Hilton Garden Inn, but not up to the standard in the restaurant at the Hanoi Opera in my opinion. They have an egg station, the usual bain-marie options, fruit, bread and pastries etc. I just had juice, toast and jam, and pastries this morning which was satisfying enough.

Both the Hiltons in Hanoi have those conveyor belt toasters. Whoever invented it has a strange sense of humour, but whoever buys it is an idiot! Once you put the bread in you lose total control. You usually have to put the bread through multiple times and it is just pot luck what you end up with. For the life of me I can't work out why this is better than a pop-up toaster.

Still, life goes on.

Probably because they amuse the children for 2 minutes

I have always assumed, and obviously I may be wrong, that the point is that more people can put their bread through the conveyor simultaneously than can use a pop-up toaster simultaneously. So it gives an illusion of serving multiple people at the same time - even though the result is that each of those people probably has to wait longer than if they had to wait for a turn at a pop-up toaster.

Clearly the sky would collapse if anyone decided to have several pop-up toasters available simultaneously :p

If you want to leave a tip for the maid(s) then leave the tip on the pillow. They will not touch money left lying around in the room. In theory anyway.

Thanks JohnK. I'll do that.

Re-stocking the fridge

I needed more beer so I went for a walk. I found a mini-mart a couple of hundred metres away. They had 330ml cans of a local beer called 333 with 5.2% alcohol content. They were VND10,200 (A$0.60) each, so I bought eight.

You may remember that I bought some 420ml bottles at 4.2% a couple of days ago. It turns out that these cans contain almost exactly the same amount of alcohol as the bottles, but at half the price. Life just keeps getting better ;).

The instructions on the can state "Best to serve cool at 10C - 15C". These people have no idea :p.

Even though I was now sweating like a pig I decided to do the return journey on foot to ensure that I've had enough exercise for the week.

Number 3 in Vietnamese is "Ba". Walk into any minimart and say ba ba ba, and they will point you in the right direction. Interestingly I found it everywhere a couple of years ago. However last October I couldn't get it anywhere in HCMC. Bia Siagon seemed to be more popular. Same manufacturer too.

Something I found helpful was to YouTube how to say hello, goodbye, thank you and how to count to 1-10. It got a lot of smiles when paying bills and tipping etc.

Thought processes of a cheapskate

I have been considering what to do about my KUL-BKK flight. I am booked on Air Asia in seat 1D which cost me A$60. My health issue means I will have to pay an additional A$30 for checked-in luggage and wheelchair assistance. I haven’t been looking forward to this flight as I have seen some quite poor reviews of their wheelchair assistance, even though you have to pay for it.

Last night I found that I could get a Malaysia Airlines flight from KUL to BKK in J for MYR600 + MYR72.90 taxes, a total of A$219. It would earn 825 QFF points and 40SC. It books into D class. Considering that I would have to cough up the extra $30 for the Air Asia flight, I convinced myself that the real cost of the MH flight would be $190. These are the thought processes of a cheapskate .

This fare is not available on all flights and the earliest I could get arrives into BKK at 4:20pm, 50 minutes later than my current flight. This is not ideal as it could shorten the time I get in the Conrad exec lounge on arrival. The cost for the ideal flight which arrives at 1:25pm was A$490, so that was never going to happen.

On checking the fare rules I found that it allows what MH call “Go Show”, or fly ahead, free of charge. So, as long as J is not full I will be able to take my preferred flight, and if I can’t, it won’t be a total disaster. That will just mean that I spend about 5 hours in the Golden Wing First Lounge pre-flight and have to drink faster when I get to the Conrad .

Another thing to consider was that while I’ve flown in both Y and F with MH, I’ve never done J. The reviews of MH J in a 737-800 are nothing special, but what the hell. As Tony Hancock points out, "they serve meat on sticks with peanut sauce". Apparently they’ve recently stopped serving alcohol in J on flights less than three hours, but I can make up for that in the F lounge beforehand.

The flight distance is 757 miles, a little further than ADL-SYD, which I do quite often. Flight time is 2 hours, 5 minutes. The cheapest Qantas flight ADL-SYD on the same day is $178 in Y and $801 in J. That makes $219 (make that $190) for the MH flight seem quite reasonable, even to a cheapskate.

Anyway, at 1.33am local time, after about 4 hours of trying to convince myself that I did indeed deserve to treat myself to this experience, and having consumed a few beers to dull the pain, I hit the 'purchase' button.

The most painful thing about this is that I will have to throw away my $60 Air Asia flight. $60 down the drain. Ouch! But lesson learnt. If I’d looked at the time I chose that flight I probably could have booked a Y flight on MH for less than a hundred bucks, with luggage and wheelchair assistance included, along with all of the WP benefits. I was more focused on the value differential between a J award flight and the Air Asia flight. Hindsight is such a wonderful thing.

Re: Thought processes of a cheapskate

This morning I had another look at the MH fares. The flight I paid MYR673 for is now MYR2364 (A$770) and that’s more than the earlier flight that that I’m hoping to get. I’m feeling quite clever now!

HGI Room Service

As I’d eaten out for the last two nights, I decided to try out the room service tonight. Here’s a picture.

The menu
HGI Menu.jpg

Bun Cha with dipping sauce (not soup)
Bun Cha.jpg

Bun Cha is a dish that originates in Hanoi. It is thinly sliced pork belly and came with four meat patties and rice noodles.

It was very nice and good value at VND160,000++ (A$10.80). That's pretty cheap for Hilton room service.

More points

Points have posted for the Hilton Hanoi Opera. 7382 HH points and 1020 Avios.
