Re: More points

Another thing to consider was that while I’ve flown in both Y and F with MH, I’ve never done J. The reviews of MH J in a 737-800 are nothing special, but what the hell. As Tony Hancock points out, "they serve meat on sticks with peanut sauce". Apparently they’ve recently stopped serving alcohol in J on flights less than three hours, but I can make up for that in the F lounge beforehand.
Business class on an MH 737 is indeed nothing special. Seat is a little bit bigger and you get a meal. I generally choose row 1 window.

A couple of weeks ago I flew the reverse route to your proposed route. No satay but even better no dry curry pie which has been the only choice on many KUL-SIN and vv flights in the past.

Hilton advertising fail

Dear Hilton advertising people,

I find the current picture on your website quite strange. Are you trying to sell hotel rooms in exotic locations or ugly, oversize, "his and hers" sunglasses?

Late check-out

I rang reception this morning to request a 2pm check-out. "No problem" she said. "Could you please come down to reception so that we can re-program your key-card". This is so much better than getting back to your room to find you've been locked out.

Other properties, please take note.

Back to the Hilton Hanoi Opera

Today I headed back to the Hilton Hanoi Opera. I used UberX for the 600 metre trip which took five minutes and cost VND9,430 (A$0.55), my cheapest Uber ride yet. I've noticed that Uber Hanoi round down to the nearest VND1000, unless the fare is under VND10,000.

The HGI was generally excellent but the WiFi was the worst I’ve encountered on this trip. I was only getting one Mbps whereas everywhere else I’ve averaged between six and nine Mbps. It was still perfectly usable for browsing etc. but wouldn’t play video. I didn’t try using it for Skype or logging in to work, and I’m pretty sure neither would’ve worked.

However, it was the nicest room I’ve had so far and also the cheapest, even allowing for the fact that I had to pay for my own beer and food (other than breakfast). The free laundry facilities are a major plus. I would definitely recommend the HGI Hanoi based on my experience of the one bedroom suite.

It’s good to be back at the Opera. The lady who looks after the rooms on my floor saw me get out of the lift and welcomed me back like a long lost friend. I’m back in the same room as my last stay, which I had asked for on my previous check-out.

The rate is the same as my last stay at A$93.50 per night. I'm here for four nights.

Dinner at the exec lounge

Dinner at the Exec Lounge tonight. It's bucketing down outside with an amazing lightning show. Unsurprisingly, Uber is on surge pricing. UberX is at 3.2X and Black is 2.1X. And going up - UberX now 3.5X. How high can it go?

Thunder now too.

Some of tonight's selection. Smoked duck breast mini baguette, mini spring roll and beef in black bean with rice. That's spicy!

Apple crumble. Yum.
ELDessert.jpg

3.6X and 2.5X now.

I find it funny that when surge pricing kicks in Uber Black becomes cheaper than UberX. It's a bit like people who assume that Jet* is cheaper than Qantas or Virgin. Or Air Asia is cheaper than Malaysian. Fools!

Now it's 3.5X and 2.9X. Black still cheaper. Minimum fares VND17,500 and VND14,500 respectively.

The English Language

I love the English language. This is the sign by the lifts.

Lift Sign.jpg

This would suggest that you should never use the elevator in case there is a fire. I think it should read "In the event of a fire, do not use the elevator". But maybe I'm being a little pedantic .

Annoying dude

This bloke at the table next to me in the exec lounge has just got off the phone after more that an hour and a half on the same call. I don't know who is more pi**ed off, me or the guy he was talking to!

Get Off The Damn Phone.jpg

On the positive side, I do know a lot about his business and who he's considering sacking!

Re: Annoying dude

In that very same lounge when I was there, a woman was quite upset there was no sparkling. " I have stayed at every Hilton hotel, and they have all had sparkling, this is the only one that doesn't". The staff member handled it well and I was sorely tempted to go and quiz the woman on "all" the HH she had stayed at.

Sweet spot in KrisFlyer redemptions

I am taking advantage of what I think is a very nice sweet spot using KrisFlyer (KF) points. I’ve already posted that I’m flying on SQ in J HAN-SIN-KUL for 17,000 points and A$174 in taxes etc.

I want to expand on this a little in the hope it will be of use to readers of this thread. Almost everything I’m doing on this trip is possible due to my AFF learnings and I like to give a bit back if I can.

The 17,000 points includes the 15% discount for on-line bookings, so when you do a search it will show up as 20,000 points. When you select an available flight the points cost will reduce by 15%. This point cost is for Business Saver Awards and the routes I’m discussing have surprisingly good availability.

This morning I checked availability for the flights I will be doing on Monday and they are still available. Interestingly, if I try to book just the SIN-KUL leg (currently on the A350-900) it is not available, but it is as a connecting flight from HAN.

As an example of why I consider this such a sweet spot, the route I am flying has a 3.5 hour leg (HAN-SIN) followed by a one hour leg (SIN-KUL). If you were to redeem KF points for just the SIN-KUL leg the cost will be 14,875 points plus ~A$100. So the extra HAN-SIN leg is only an extra 2,125 points plus A$74.

There are even better options available for 17,000 points and roughly the same taxes that will get you a longer second leg. You can travel to or from anywhere that SQ services, between Malaysia, Indonesia or Brunei, and the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar or Cambodia. There are back-tracking restrictions so BKK-SIN-KUL or DPS-SIN-BKK are allowed, but BKK-SIN-HAN is not for example.

DPS-SIN-HAN can get you a 2 hour 40 minute flight in an A330-300 then 3 hours 20 minutes in a B777-200, all in J. You need to pick your flights carefully though as SQ also fly the A320 DPS-SIN which will not be quite the same experience. Note that this combination will require an overnight transit at SIN but HAN-SIN-DPS can be done in a day (or with an overnight transit if you prefer). Changi Crowne Plaza is a pretty good use of usually worthless IHG points in my opinion. As you can see, there are lots of options.

If you don’t have KF points, as you probably know, you can transfer Virgin Velocity points to KrisFlyer at a rate of 1.35:1. So 22,950 VFF points will get you the required 17,000 KF points. That still seems like a pretty good deal to me.

I realise this may well be as clear as mud so I’m happy to try to answer any relevant questions you may have.

HGI Points

The points have posted for my stay at Hilton Garden Inn Hanoi. 3165 HH points and 504 Avios. That's the problem with these cheap stays, you earn stuff all points ;).

These points posted in about 26 hours from check-out. I've been averaging three days for the previous stays.

All stays pre-paid. I've noticed that I'm not earning points for my room service charges. No biggie as I haven't spent that much, but I'm a bit surprised.

Seafood Buffet - Again

It's Saturday so I went back for the A$40 lunchtime buffet at the Hilton Hanoi Opera. I took a few more photos to share this time.

That stack of plates in the picture below saved me from a fall. I was carrying a plate of prawns and stumbled when my right foot failed to correctly perform the instruction sent by my cerebellum. To stop myself from falling I put my hand on the top of that stack of plates. It made a hell of a racket which was a bit embarrassing, but on the plus side I was no longer allowed to carry food back to my table :p.

There were no oysters again. I asked if they had any and she just said "No, sorry". So I got some prawns & baby octopus and went back to my table. A few minutes later the boss lady came and apologised, saying that oysters are not very good at this time of year. Fair enough, and I appreciated the fact that she took the time to come and talk to me.

Re: Seafood Buffet - Again

I really enjoyed the musicians last week so I selected a front row seat this time.

These guys were one of the main reasons I came back. They ensured it was a very enjoyable afternoon.
