China - never a dull moment!

FWIW re-opening of China getting closer:

Whilst we are not there yet but it is definitely getting closer - now of course getting flts will be the next hurdle.

Look out for premium cabin availability once China does open and 3 years of ZERO coming and going both ways comes to an end - throw in inability of carriers right around the globe to ramp up frequency and we will no doubt be facing seriously challenging times.

Mrs Woodyren's mum is currently in hospital in Shenyang with Covid. She is 95. Spent the first night in emergency on oxygen as there were no beds but they have now moved her to a ward. Family reporting huge numbers waiting for admission and/or treatment.

We were hoping to be able to visit once things settled in a few months.

Tough times for locals particularly the elderly.

What is the cause of this current surge? Is this just the facts on the ground being completely different to official propaganda.
I thought China had spent the extra months in lockdown getting vaccination rates well up?

two issues. Very poor uptake especially amongst the elderly. And the queried effectiveness of the vaccine. Their delay was never about preparation for opening.

My mother in law passed away today. Covid will sadly take a severe toll on the elderly in China as it has elsewhere.
My sincerest condolences to you and MrsW - it has made it doubly tragic that your wife was not able to visit to see her one last time. I do know a bit of what that is like, as my mother was in Victoria during lockdown but it is is nothing like being separated internationally. It makes it hard that we seem to be living lives where covid although around seems to be ignored but that China now has rapidly escalating cases for a number of reasons.

Is this any different to the train running from Shanghai airport? Was fantastic! I understood the reason it hasn't been built outside of that line is the huge amount of energy required.
I think the new proposal is to run trains in a pressurised tube. That’s a key difference to the maglev currently running.

No doubt too, there have been efficiencies in the last 10 or so years regarding the powering of these.

Maglevs have several advantages over their wheeled counterparts… apparently the shinkansens take a heavy toll on overhead wiring for example. And maglevs can reportedly operate in more severe weather.
