China - never a dull moment!

Pre Covid I was constantly watching the evolution of BYD electric Vehicles ever since my first taxi ride in one in Nanjing like 6 or 7 years ago - ATPIT max range around Nanjing City was about 250-280km then needed to return to base to re-charge.

They have an outstanding range for the domestic Chinese market and new arrival of what would have been the cheapest electric car in Australia has been delayed - The BYD Atto 3, Set To Be Australia’s Cheapest Electric Car, Has Been Delayed

Now most would turn their noses up at Chinese motor vehicle build quality - BUT - during another visit to Nanjing I was sitting in bar on 78th floor of Intercontinental Hotel in Nanjing and met the CEO of Ford Asia Pacific - he told me unequivocally the best quality finished product that Ford produced anywhere in their factories around the world were coming out of their plant in Chongqing Sichuan Province - go figure

Checked out the atto in Sydney for the in-laws and have pre-ordered

Tesla is also buying batteries from BYD

Well that’s a doozy of a question for the ethicists if ever there was one!!

by coincidence I walked past the BYD showroom in Darlinghurst on Sunday and thought to myself “what brand is that”. Now I know!

This will be interesting - Robotaxi

Interesting? or Intrigued or Curious? I would be in the I will believe it when I see it camp. Just like I was with Musk and his Hyperloop.

At its core is the cost to prove it is safe and low risk. To prove it is safe will take time and cost a lot - and will be derailed rapidly with the first instance of a risk to person or property that I doubt any savvy investor has deep enough pockets or desire to see it through to its desired fruition.

Possible? = yes. Probable? = no.

Just got this email today regarding APEC/VISA to China:

Dear virtual APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) holders,

New Zealand has received a notice from the APEC Business Mobility Group (BMG) that China has advised they will not be accepting the virtual ABTC at this time.

Until further notice, all travellers holding a virtual ABTC will need to apply for a visa to enter China.

We understand the inconvenience this may cause. New Zealand government agencies will continue working with the BMG to promote the acceptance of the virtual ABTC amongst all APEC economies. We will provide further updates via the INZ website when they become available.

Kind regards

Immigration New Zealand

Well again, I can’t say that I’m surprised about this. Canberra, no less.

The Epoch Times used to be available for free at many shopping centres in Canberra. This publication is very anti ccp.

They are not available now, rumour has it the embassy used to go and remove them after they had been distributed. Can’t have freedom of speech in the Nation’s capital, can we?

We are so lucky to live in a country where free speech is the norm. But of course YMMV.

Didn’t see your reply until now as I have you on ignore, very useful tool! :)

I think the height of the ‘China Season’ was around 2013/2014. Things started to change after that. Most people I know there have now left.
