China - never a dull moment!

These pictures reminded me of my last stay at the Faimont Peace...just weeks before the "Wuhan flu" :p
I really wonder when's the next time I'll get to PVG!

Interesting stoy - allegedly - with the Shanghai World Financial Building (the building with the large square hole in the top).

Apparently the original design was for a circle… which was approved… until they realised that once a year the sun would shine directly through the hole, recreating the Japanese flag.

The design was changed to a square!

Arrival Quarantine anybody?

It is nuts - but hasn't changed much in the past 12 months

Has been 21 days for Shanghai and 28 days or more everywhere else in China for a good 12 months already.

But post the first 14 days, it is honestly BS - as if you have a home, it is voluntary home isolation - hence the 14+14 day - as the first number lag is hotel quarantine, and the subsequent days is highly voluntary and nothing stopping you going out and about if you choose to.

Even if you don't have a home, but find a non quarantine hotel that will take you - you can do all other days at another hotel and come and go as you please. You just will have a Red QR code so will be limited in going anywhere or traveling where they require you to have a Green QR Code to do so.

The sad thing is too many people see this news and panic today - vrs put it away and become aware this will impact the supply chain for them the most in 6-12 months time and act accordingly for the medium term.

In my business, we started 2022 with plans to go big, and get into China in person and manufacture a lot and fill our warehouses of 2-3 years of stock.

With what has transpired - that has shifted to being a 2023 goal - and have sat down and recalculated at what we need to put into production in March 2022 to just last us until July 2023 - and put that very scaled down list into production.

I have been in the manufacturing/importing game my whole life, and meet many people who are also in manufacturing/importing over those 26 odd years - and I am always interested in the time frames in their business from the first concept of a product to sell through until the day they actually sell to a consumer off the shelf. More often than not - it is more than 12 months than less than 12 months. Sure in shipping out of a port in China, it is in the latter half of that process and timeline - but still.

Shanghai Ports have had backlogs and congestion since January - and this is the same as what they have been since January. March you started to see ships omit Shanghai, allowing more capacity to be available at other ports like Ningbo (next port south of Shanghai by 3 hours trucking) & Qingdao (next port north of Shanghai by 12 hours trucking) to fill the ship.
