China travel bans from Late 2022

I had no idea what I had and didn't have as a child. Was it my responsibility to know there was a vaccine available in 1995 and I should check? Well blow me down with a feather. I found out the hard way in 2010 and nearly died.

Seems odd to me that you were not aware of your own medical history. If you had chicken pox you would likely remember the itching or you parenyts would have mentioned it. But if you werent sure, yes it is your responisblity to seek out vacinatoon as it is well known to be serious in adults and can severly impact unborn children.

Do you never discuss vaccines with your GP before travlling? Travel GPs will always recommend Chicken Pox vaccine to adults who cant confirm they have had it.

Also if you have small children in your household who are most lilley to be exposed to the common childhood diseases it can be worthwhile having boosters for MMR etc.

People our age never had the primary MM vaccine but should have had rubella and booster whooping cough. It never occurred to me having never had chicken pox as a child, to get the vaccination. I caught it in my thirties and gave it to my kids. Ooops.

Logic requires smart thinking.

Chicken pox has a very high chance of serious consequences if caught by an adult. People get it once and numbers of adults who get it are small. The cost of asking those people to isolate is small and the benefit is great.

Flu is much more widespread, people can get it multiple times and the consequences for most people are not serious. It would be a high cost to mandate isolation and low benefit - nevertheless, people are asked to use common sense and isolate if they have it.
You mention common sense.

Prior to covid the thinking was it's only the flu. People were going to work, shopping, everywhere without any thought of the consequences. Common sense says stay home and don't spread it around? I'm glad lots of employers are now taking respiratory viruses seriously.

Sorry @drron I don't think spreading the flu around is such a good idea. For most people it's torture for at least 1 week while others can be weeks or months.

I am reminded I have had chickpox every morning by the faint pox scar in the middle of my forehead. Very common location for a pox scar I believe. Something to do with location of trigeminal ganglion apparently.

now Korea is banning hk and Macau flights from other Korean airports except ICN!

The first I had heard of chicken pox vaccine was in 2011 after I had chicken pox for the first time. Should I have known there was a vaccine available in 1995? How? Being proactive?

I travelled to Asia for the first time in 2003 and that was for work. Hep A, Hep B, tetanus, rabies, cholera etc but no mention of chicken pox. I think I now have Hep B immunity but not Hep A. I don't bother keeping tetanus, cholera and rabies up to date.

Tit for tat can result in prolonged ongoing conflict unless one party starts employing tit for 2 tats strategy (see below) by not reciprocating i.e. by removing restrictions like Thailand has. Its all game theory...
Not many people want this to continue, but sadly the current situation in the world we are seeing it and in increasing ways😢

Yes, sadly the world has far more dangerous conflicts to worry about than a few countries requiring inbound travellers to prove they dont have Covid before getting on a plane... we are living in interesting times indeed..

Though on one of the Singapore TV News channels on the evening of the 4/1 the Health minister said one of the major reasons for not imposing testing on China was that families in Singapore for the first time in 3 years could visit their family in China or have family from China visit them. In their case it was just as well that the science supported their political thoughts.

No question family reunion very important. So according to the "science", being vacinated doesnt stop you getting Covid but may reduce the severity of the disease and thus the risk of hospitalisation and death. So their approach would prevent an unvacinated person with Covid from getting on the plane (based on required PDT for unvacinated) but allows someone who is fully vacinated and has active Covid to enter unfettered. Or did I read that wrong?
Understand logic for not testing wastewater or testing on/post arrival.

Singapore has a vaccination rate of 93.9% one of the highest rates in the world so an unvaccinated covid person arriving is unlikely to cause a major problem for their health system.

Yep no doubt Drron. But they subjecting unvacinated pax to pre departure test so thats not going to happen. Its the vacinated pax with Covid I was wondering about. Anyway, high level of vacinated pop and good hosp system in SIN will be able to cope with any spike so all good.

But were you not one of the cheerleaders for it just a couple of days ago?
