I'm from Wuhan and migrated to Australia for 10+ years, and travel regularly to China. Early Jan I transited back to MEL via CAN from DXB, so didn't get a chance to feel what's happening in my home city. My parents are here in MEL as well, so again no first hand information.

However, we do keep in contact with my other family members back in Wuhan, and my wife's parents in another secondary city in Hubei, on a daily basis, so we did get many second-hand information from the last couple months. (Plus my home ini Wuhan is basically 10mins away from the notorious Wet Market, which I frequent to when I was young for seafood.)

Overall, no one really trusted the number from gov, both the infected and death. It was really terrible in Feb particularly, all my family members locked indoors, relying on delivery/online shopping for food, etc.

One thing from the conversation/video from WeChat is if your family member is not in the front-line for the battle, you just slowly getting used to the situation, and take the time to relax (not really much can do). But you can feel everyone still confident and happy generally speaking (reckon CCP's propagation plays some role here).

Lately, the numbers are definitely getting better, even though on one trusts, people are more looking forward to life style changing shortly, together with the coming of summer. Those who lives in my house can actually now go out, take public transport now, albeit need a green code on WeChat.

With all the news happening here, they started to worry more about me and my family here now, they are aware it's not easy to get face masks in AU (and no one is wearing), and asked a few times whether we want them to send some from Wuhan. (I think you still cannot post directly from WUH, but via other proxy cities).

So if you ask me what is the reality there in Wuhan, I'd say from my family's perspective, everything is getting better slowly, less worries about the virus now, but more worries about the economy damage caused by the virus.

It seems there is no stimulus package similar as in AU or UK doing at the moment for SMB in China, and the continuous world-wide lockdown means export biz in China will suffer a very long time.

If you have any specific question about Wuhan, maybe I can ask some answers from my families. They are all ordinary Wuhan'ers :)

What I wonder, if it is true that China sent out faulty face masks to the 'rest of the world', did they do that on purpose as a dastardly political get back or some such, or was it just shoddy manufacture / QC?

If the choice is between a conspiracy and a stuff up the stuff up wins every time.

Usually agree, but the USA keeps riling them with the 'China virus' description. I think they are both pretty pi**ed off w' each other. Just hope they leave us out of it.

And this is the company that needs to be supported after the crisis is over.

Since that report the production has increased again and on Thursday a report they were on track to produce 2 million masks this week.

I understand the modelling multiplied the actual illness and death rate in China by 5 in best case scenario. That info is beginning to leak out publically now.

I do NOT believe the published figures in China.. as they do tend to hide the real figure.. and I think more accurate figure is 10s of thousands are dead already

Quite likely too. I was being minimalist in saying 5 times. Awful times. And the damn wet markets are open again. What's the point really.

The reason those markets still open because in Chinese culture.. they think eating bats and so on are delicacies.. I know because I am a Chinese born person (Proud to be Australian) - before someone bashes me... I DO NOT support such delicacies in any shape or form...

Yes I understand it's cultural. I'm not sure that eating bats properly destroyed and cooked is the issue. Otherwise viral issues would have arisen in many other countries. But it's also time to look at live animal markets mixed with other markets where animals are destroyed on the spot. As a practice I find it abhorrent but that's not important. Whatever happened in that market, then subsequent cover up, has pretty much destroyed much of what the world holds important to their culture. Immense loss of life in other countries who did absolutely nothing to create the situation. Broken up families. Destroyed others. Sent many businesses to the wall. My DIL can not attend her grandmothers funeral in the UK. I will not have any contact with my children and grandchild for many months. Others are losing family members. Several members have lost their work. That cannot happen again.

I 100% agree with you... but I would not be optimistic enough to say this wont happen again... Please do not forget who runs China now... the CCP and I must say their track record of telling the truth that it would not occur again... I would take that with a grain of salt and would not believe them...

Oh yes. And that's scary. It's actually one reason I "like" Trump at the moment, just for his concern about China. Not much else he sprouts though.

Well things look even worse for Chinese and the truth. It appears Taiwan warned the WHO that Covid 19 did have human to human spread on December 31st.However as Taiwan is not a member of WHO and on the same day China said there was no evidence of human to human spread the Taiwanese report was ignored.
To be honest... according to Beijing... Taiwan is a state in China... they should have NO say in international affairs... trust the CCP and you will be fine... luckily Taiwan did not and is doing well against this virus

Just look at who is throwing the mud at China. Is he a credible source?
