Christmas in San Francisco

Perhaps a blessing in disguise your group didn't go on the Harry Potter ride. That thing goes backwards, forwards, sideways, upside down, awkward angles, then does it again. Could have been a messy ride.

So, here it is – butterbeer. A sickly sweet concoction of creaming soda with butterscotch whipped cream on top. I did manage to finish the cup, but it was a struggle. Just too sweet.

Perhaps some Duff would help?

By now the SIL was really feeling it. He couldn’t go on any longer. He walked with us to Jurassic World while stepdaughter and myself went on the ride as the wait was only five minutes. It was kinda fun.

Nice views over the hills.

But that was enough for him. He had to leave. He caught a taxi back to the house where he reportedly vomited in the front garden and then went straight to bed. Seems like this was gastro and not food poisoning.

We went to an animal show where domesticated animals put on a show of tricks etc. It was quite good, but I have seen similar at Taronga zoo with much more exotic animals.

By mid afternoon is started raining and we'd pretty seen everything. We waited in line for the Walking Dead 'walk' which scared the bejesus out of the girls, but was probably the lamest thing I had seen. Just a bunch of people dressed up as zombies jumping out and trying to scare you loses its impact after the first one.
I liked Universal Studios, but was surprised at how small it was. The three of us jumped into a cab and headed back to the apartment to find SIL still in bed and in a very, very bad way indeed.
BY now the wife had come back and Miss 16 was still feeling under the weather a bit from the previous day. So I decided to wander down Hollywood Blvd for a look.
Floral tribute to Debbie Reynolds who had died only a day earlier.

And a short stroll away, the same for her daughter Carrie Fisher.

And a special star for my departed Mum who loved Tom Selleck more than my Dad I think. We used to watch Magnum PI together.

Of course with no takers for an early evening stroll, it also meant I had free reign to the bar of my choice.
I settled on Buffalo Wild Wings. Not the most delightful of choices but it was very close to the apartment and it was busy.
I settled in for a nice pint of Sam Adams Winter Ale.

Amid all of the sickness and the hustle and bustle, we'd pretty much forgotten it was New Year's Eve. I've never been a big NYE celebrator which was just as well, as it didn't seem like we were doing much tonight.
I went back to the apartment where everyone was just sitting around and SIL was still in bed. I 'volunteered' to go looking for takeaway food as an excuse of slipping another couple of pints in. The wife knew exactly what I was up to and just said 'go and have another beer' just let us know what you want from Uber eats. Good woman.
Headed back to the bar for two more than called it quits.

Got back around 8pm and everyone was in bed asleep. Happy New Year Year.
This was our 2nd and last night in Hollywood. Tomorrow we were headed for Anaheim to stay at Ayres Hotel and do Disneyland.

Mrsdrron I sometimes feel loves Tom Selleck more than me.But I did watch Magnum PI with her.
Hope the gastro doesn't hit anyone else.

Well in my age group it's George Clooney but on the other hand that Scotsman is pretty nice all round.

I stayed in an Apt along the Blvd myself in June and...OMG that road turns into a race track until dawn! Absolute nightmare. I'll stick to Long Beach i think whenever staying in LA. Good to see you managing to fit in the odd beer mate.

Certainly sounds like it - hope it didn't work its way through you all.

Well Happy New Year indeed.
Woke up very early and with a balcony party still going on at 6.30am right across the car park, I decided to go for a run up into the Hollywood Hills. It was quite brisk outside, hovering around 6 degrees celcius. I turned right at Hollywood Blvd and ran as far as it would take me and then turned right to run as far as the lower parts of the hills. Some prime real estate here. The streets were very quiet. No drunks staggering around, just locals out walking their dogs. This is why I like running when I'm on holidays. You get to see things that the tourist trail doesn't take you.
A tough slog up into the hills, but a bit easier coming back down although the old knees aren't what they used to be and they probably tolerate uphill better than downhill these days.
Once back at the apartment it was around 7.30am and the SIL was feling better, but the wife had now contracted the gastro. She was in a really bad way. Vomitting since 2am and could not move.
This was not good. It was striking us down one by one.
We had a few hours and the wife was so bad that I contemplated asking the Air B&B owner if we could stay another night and the kids just continue on to Anaheim. She insisted she was OK. We booked a cab and a rustled up a few plastic bags for the trip just in case a sick bag was required.
The roads were very quiet and it only took 40 minutes from Hollywood Blvd to Ayres Hotel in Anaheim.
It was noon and check in wasn't until 3pm, but we were desperate for them to make at least one room available immediately as the wife was not in any condition to do anything other than lay in bed.
Thankfully one room was available and we all left our luggage there and let her sleep.
We went out to the Orange County Outlets (my uber rating went from 4.80 to 4.81 so it was slowly going in the right direction) which were an OK way to while away a few hours. some lunch at Johnny Rockets and then it was time to head to the hotel to check in.
Rooms were surprisingly roomy and decent.

The hotel wasn't far from Disneyland and there was a shuttle that were could catch the following day.
Wife was not going anywhere tonight and as the hotel is pretty stuck out in the middle of nowhere, the kids weren't that keen either.
The is a pub literally across the road from the hotel called Schmick's and the Honda Centre is next door. What was a man to do? I ventured over to the pub at 4.50pm to discover that the Honda Centre was playing host to the Ducks vs Philadephia NHL game and the place was packed. I almost turned back around, but my old man told me that walking past a pub with the initial intention of walking in is very bad luck.
Turned out the game started at 5pm and it cleared out very quickly.
The Honda Centre.

Enjoyed a few pints and then messaged the kids to see whether wanted takeaway. The pub did takeaway so I took a few pics of the menu and Facebook messaged them.

After grabbing takeway (Miss 16 was well enough to have some calimari and I had some tacos) we fell to sleep wondering whether the missus would be Ok in the morning and whether it would be me or the stepdaughter who would wake up sick.
Bets were placed and the consensus was that neither of us would get sick (positive thinking), but next scenario was that she would get sick tomorrow and I would get sick for the 15-hour Y trip back home.
yay!

You didn't slip them something in their water did you? You seem to have avoided it nicely ;)

Loving the TR. we had 10days SFO in July and 5 days LA in Jan doing Universal and Disneyland and your writing is really bringing the great memories back - thanks a lot!

Our final day arrived and the big question was 'who was the next to fall victim'?
Wife was feeling much better, confirming that this virus was a 24-hour thing. When it struck, it struck with full force, but at least it didn't hang around long.
The good news is that nobody woke up sick today.
The kids were excited for Disneyland and headed out early. I took my time and had some of the complimentary breakfast at the hotel which was decent enough. There was a small gym at the hotel and by mid morning there was nobody in it so I decided to do some work on the treadmill.
Wife and I headed out to Disneyland on the shuttle, which cost $5 return.

Now, I'm guessing that this place is busy every day of the year and today was no exception. It was very busy. The lines for the rides were looooooong, but there was a parade starting soon, which was actually quite good.

After the parade, I wandered around by myself as everyone else was hungry and went to have some lunch.
This is where I made a huge mistake. I got mixed up in the general walkway and a line to a ride. To my horror I had inadvertently wandered aimlessly into the line for the "It's a Small World" kiddies ride. I had no choice but to stick it out. This ride is for little kiddies, but at least i can say I did it. It was a long 10 minutes.

After a little longer of walking around, I just didn't 'get' the place. I realised it was just me and that the overwhelming majority of people who come here, love the place. I didn't.

After a couple of hours, I'd honestly had enough.
I decided to get the shuttle back to the hotel after we'd realised that, although we had a 3pm check-out time, we hadn't checked out. BY now it was 2pm and I graciously 'volunteered' to go back and check us all out and see if we could extend one of the rooms by a few hours as our shuttle to LAX wasn't picking us up until 6pm.
The shuttle is supposed to run every 20 minutes and then every 40 minutes from noon to 4pm. It took an hour for it to arrive and by the time I got back to the hotel it was right on 3pm check out time.
I asked politely about extending one of the rooms until 6pm but was told that we would have to pay full rate for that so I politely declined. Fair enough. I messaged the others telling them there was no need to hurry back unless they wanted to sit in the lobby or go to the bar.
Believe it or not, I actually sat in the foyer until the others arrived back at around 5.30pm after a fun day.
Also, I was starting to feel a bit unwell.
