i've just started using these and this was one of the issues i was a little bit worried about. it sounds like easiest option for those last few remaining dollars or cents is to use it at a large fast food chain, as they seem to accept split payment and don't have surcharge. of course this necessitates buying something form a large fast food chain, which might not be ideal! But I found it difficult to use up the small balance I had on one. The restaurant had a card surcharge so some math was needed while standing at the register doing a split transaction.

if i'm not mistaken, the card on discount this week is one that can be used at any terminal with the appropriate merchant code, rather than specific restaurants. there is another type of card (name escapes me right now) that is only accepted at named restaurants, which may be the one you're referring to.Worthwhile checking exactly which restaurants still accept the card. Given one as a gift last Xmas and found most locations were at the top of the scale for menu price, predominantly in the CBD and only 2 (ex-CBD) that would see us out for under $150 without alcohol.
If its for a restaurant you frequent then go for it, otherwise buyer beware.
