Re: Scams like these

As I can't even find the calculator at present, could you please point me in the right direction to roll back to Windows 7?

I'm not all that keen to save Windows 10. Maybe there will be an upgrade which users find friendly one day.

"

  • If it’s been less than a month since you upgraded to Windows 10, you can go back to your previous version of Windows by going to Settings > Update & security > Recovery and selecting either Go back to Windows 7 or Go back to Windows 8.1. This won't affect your personal files, but it will remove any apps you installed after the upgrade to Windows 10. Learn more.
  • If it’s been more than a month, this option won’t be available in Settings and you’ll need to use a different recovery option."

Re: Scams like these

When do they stop supporting XP?
On my lap top with 10 I use classic shell and then load things I use often like the calculator, snipping tool down on the task bar.
Don't rember CP/M, but I didn't have a PC until the early nineties. The first operating system I had anything major to do with was S/370.

XP support ceased A LONG TIME ago... Well a long time in computer terms... Pity they don't have a CD/DVD with all the patches after SP3.

COBOL and IBM 1972-75...

Since then quite a bit of Happy wandering

Nothing like the joy of mdbs on an 8 inch floppy.

Now (no googling the answer here) how many can say what each of the program languages or operating systems meant (not as acronyms that is)?

  • BASIC
  • COBOL
  • MDBS
  • CP/M

Re: Scams like these

I believe they already have, but who cares? I have installation CD's for all the software I need and there is probably less risk of viruses, etc, these days as it's all going to W10. I note that Google Chrome is no longer supported on XP, but good riddance I say.

And for what it's worth, I learned to program (in machine code) on an Emidec 2400 computer in 1967. I then "progressed" to PLAN and COBOL, etc, etc...

Re: Scams like these

I'll stick with XP thanks (I have 6 computers running XP and all's well). My wife has 10 on her 2 computers and hates it (with good reason). Pity Microsoft decided to try and make it all things to all people (PC's, tablets, phones, etc).
Wrt: not a good idea. Support ended a long time time ago.

Re: Scams like these

No "B"!

But these are languages not OSs.
...

Input the command to tickertape, transfer to punch card, insert it into a huge machine like something out of Lost in Space, to be recorded onto 2" (?) reel to reel tape. I can't even recall what happened after that. I was studying engineering not a programming. ;)

You forgot the step of loading the paper tape driver using the octal switches to start the reading of the boot loader to then load the language driver... And the his was all in the X-ray crystallography lab (only people with an accessible Nova Computer!).

Re: Scams like these

I was lucky, I missed all the tickertape stuff, even for printers, all though we did have an impact printer that require changing the metal printing bands occasionally, then we got some high spped 3800 laser printers, life was much easier then!
Most of my stuff was done with MVS and JES2, had some experience with JES3, didn't like it!
I'm glad to be out of that area, bumped into a guy that I knew through several work places starting in 1986, he worked for big blue, now he works for another company, said he got tired of the 50, 60, 70 hour weeks expected of him from ibm. Sorry a bit ot.

Re: Scams like these

I finally upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 when the only option I was given was the date for the upgrade to occur. Message said everything would be just the same. I now cannot find the calculator and the card games I used to relax with have changed to a completely different format which is much harder to read. There are a few other things which I also don't like.

Is there a "Go back to Windows 7" option?

There is a go back, but you only have 30 days.

Windows 10 uses lots of data and if you are using a lot of mobile data I would stay away from it unless you have a large data allowance

Good to know , have 25 gig plus another 4 gig shared ... Still might not be enough

I remember FORTRAN 4 and acoustic couplers very well.:)

Re: Scams like these

Win 10 is better than 8.1 and so much better than Vista (remember the hell of that?)

What I hate is that the inevitable annoying data wasting downloads of updates can't be indefinitely postponed. They just tell you it's happening in 15 minutes whether you like it or not.

There's also some annoying features where the screen brightness goes dark and you can't increase it as it says you are at 100% already! It's something called "adaptive screen brightness" and it can be turned off. See link:

Good article, but read the comments, people saying their screens still dull after using this fix. Someone answered not to forget the integrated intel graphics control panel might have "power saving mode" enabled too.

From what I've heard, after the Windows 10 forced install is complete you can decline the T&C agreement that is prompted and the computer will reboot and revert to the previous OS version. To further prevent it updating to Windows 10, apparently you can set your connection to metered which will prevent the update reoccuring.

It's all pretty hacky and I wouldn't recommend it. Probably best to embrace the new OS and learn how to use it, however frustrating. Ultimately you're also delaying the inevitable and missing out on future updates, features etc.

Pretty much what I have done, allowed to load and got on with it, however I really don't like being told by m$ when to download updates, especially when they auto install.
