Indeed, I get the impression Aussies are too busy emptying supermarket shelves to go on holiday!
cheers skip

Not at the supermarkets I frequent. And at Costco, when don't shoppers here have full trollies?

I think it is more that hand sanitiser has a run on.

I did a big shop on Monday with husband in tow so we could get 2 weeks worth of goods and not have to go shopping next week (or God forbid anywhere near Easter weekend). Around 11am it was pretty quiet, no queue to enter and no waiting at the check out. Toilet paper was available in both Coles and Woolies. Small bottles of Piaf hand sanitizer 100ml were available for $5 each, one per person allowed. A few types of pasta were available. Meat was the scarce item but we got enough to get us through to Friday next week. I figured it's better to make as few possible trips to the shops to limit exposure to potential sick people.

I'm expecting Easter to be totally dead this year, with all of the restrictions in place. No comparison to previous years.

Stop the panic.David Walsh (MONA ) has some interesting offers for those in isolation.

Our neighbours set up a boycott Woolies and Coles FB page for our local area, pointing people to smaller businesses that are struggling and have changed their business model to support themselves and farmers without taking the horrific margins that Woolies and Coles do.

They have 1600 locals in the group already and it’s heartwarming to see everyone pitching in and spending their money with Real thought than blindly tapping their cards at the local filthy woolies or coles!

Hope this trend continues, even if just in our local area!

Yes supporting your local shops is very important. If one closes you won’t get a replacement any time soon.

While an admirable idea, people have short memories, and things will eventually return to normal. The local shops struggle to keep afloat at the best of times.

Our local IGA is going quite well. The cafes not too well and the news agency would be tough because Australia Post have not been nice to their agencies.

They also think that the supermarkets are raking in the $$$ thanks to the panic buying which required a reduction in specials for supply and logistical reasons, while thinking that increased staffing, logistics, store cleaning, security, crowd control, signage, etc are all free. And also forgetting that other areas of those groups are also shut down.

Hubby commented that our Woolies had separate entrance and exit now and security guard at each one and security guard inside.

He didn't look at Coles

Yep, 60,000 extra staff recruited by Coles and Woolworths in the last month are magicked out of thin air working extra hours overnight stocking shelves and making changes to their mode of operation, signs and cleaning etc and don't have associated wages and other costs. [Sarcasm} The tooth fairy has been visiting overnight.

All shops around us seem to be pretty much to normal, yes; including TP! What I did notice though is the smaller market/corner store type shops were far busier than they've been in the past. Will it continue? Who knows.... as someone said earlier, people have a short memory and end up gravitating towards what they've always done.

Actually.............. brown flour, can't find that for love nor money! Plain flour, self raising flour etc. is all fine, so it's just the healthier variant that's like gold dust ;)

They are raking in the $ Sales, both chains have come out and said so. And while they are raking in the dollars their product margins are going through the roof because of all the canceled specials.

Yes there have been some increased costs as you have listed but we will see who is right when their next results update comes out for both chains.

And yes you have a point about the diversified nature of Woolworths group but I’m talking about the supermarket division. I’m sure they are very upset that their massive poker machine business is now temporary shut down and whilst I feel for those who lost their jobs In that division most people wouldn’t exactly be devastated about Woolworths the pokie people having to shut that part of the business down.

Thankfully our community is a little different and lots of small businesses flourish here already. The group is simply putting them more top of mind and also making sure the people supplying them get a better deal as well, it’s public knowledge how much Woolworths and Coles screw the end suppliers and farmers.

Plus people build relationships with smaller businesses, get to know the staff, owners etc.

Compare that to the mostly poker faced bored out of their brain (who can blame them) supermarket workers on minimum wage just counting the days to get out of there.

Haven't had flour or yeast in Adelaide in any supermarket for weeks.

Coles the same. Feels so weird with so many guards. Do they really need that many???

Gee jakeseven7 you obviously not a Queenslander or Tasmanian. In both states I don't meet poker faced supermarket workers.I can always get a smile and some conversation with them.

As for flour you should live in Tassie.Always available though more expensive.
