According to News Reports - this is QF 59 from SYD to HND and the flight was forced to show a movie for everyone as the IFE failed in flight. The movie is Daddio with Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson. Sadly this is a daytime flight when passengers would be mostly awake...

So... they're suggesting that Qantas flight crew didn't unilaterally select an inappropriate movie. Rather, they asked passengers what they wanted to watch and said passengers selected Daddio. I smell a beat up.

Qantas never edits anything - they are shown exactly as intended and leaves it up to the viewer to decide if they wish to watch it

Although the R rating is the US, not Australia, which equates to a MA rating here.

I don’t actually think they have R rated movies in the IFE and if they did, I would think they are edited down (many true R rated films have a tamer version for certain markets that won’t permit the content. Even Australia FTA stations often use the lower classification versions).

Yeah. I'd never heard of the movie, but looking it up it is rated MA in Australia.

That’s a US rating. Consistent with MA here from the description.

NC-17 is the US equivalent of Australian R. It’s very rare.

Classification is a red herring. The films content just wasn't suitable to be shown on all screens on the flight, with no option to turn it off (that sounds odd). The crew obviously didn't know what the pax had 'voted' for (or you'd hope they didn't know).

After a while it was taken off and another film shown. From the report:

Qantas confirmed that when it became clear the movie was not appropriate for all ages, the crew attempted to fix the screens for customers who did not want to watch it.

However, when they realised this was not possible, the film was changed to a children’s movie instead.

A er, mistake (for want of a better expression ) but poor judgement by the crew, it seems.

Agree, this doesn't sound quite right. And even if it was, you can't tell me there was no way to put something over the screen (i.e. in the event that a parent wished to prevent their child from watching the screen in front of them).

I mean... realistically it sounds like the passengers were simply shown the modern-day equivalent (by today's standards, at least) of the old midday FTA tele-movie.

Sarcasm aside, I'd love to know how many passengers spoke up about the unsuitability of the film. Leaving it run for an hour before switching film choice sounds a bit unlikely (unless it took that long for people to decide that the film was too racy for general viewing).
