A sad day for Australian cricket, 3-4 earlier than I had expected.

Shane Warne to retire

Watch Shane Warne's press conference live on ninemsn from 12.25pm (AEDT).

The "Sheik of Tweak" will draw the curtain on his 15-year career today.

Shane Warne will announce today at a midday press conference his intention to retire from at the end of the Ashes series after inevitably becoming the first Test player to pass the hallowed 700-wicket mark in the Boxing Day Test in his home town of Melbourne.

Life after Warne

Michael Jordan, John Eales, Brad Fittler … Shane Warne.

History suggests the Australian cricket team are in for a rough ride after the latter of those four champions confirmed that he will have bowled his last ball for Australia at the end of the Ashes series.

Warne’s announcement that he will retire from International and domestic cricket following the final Ashes Test in Sydney has doomsayers proclaiming the end of Australia’s world dominance. The departure of a champion can leave a team with a massive hole to fill and the on field results often illustrate the enormity of the loss.

I don't recall Australian cricket falling to bits while he was under suspension.
I don't think I said that either.

It will not be the same with Warne not bowling for Australia.

Sorry JohnK, my comment was more directed at the referenced article (but that doesn't get included in the quote!. The article seems to think Australian cricket is going to go downhill because of Warne's retirment. I think it was overstating things just a bit.

Don;t get me wrong, I think Warne was a great player, but he is just one of a team.

Sell those Boxing Day tickets and get some 2nd Day ones ...

Hmm, the weather forecast for Melbourne for the start of the 4th Test is not looking too flash:
  • Monday (Christmas Day): Showers, mostly over southern and mountain areas, tending to rain at times. Local hail in the south and Alpine snow. Cool to cold southwest to southerly wind becoming strong and gusty.
  • Tuesday (Boxing Day): Showers, tending to rain areas in the southeast at times but becoming isolated in the north. Snowfalls in the Alps clearing. Cool to cold with strong, squally southwest wind slowly easing.
  • Wednesday: Showers clearing from the north and becoming isolated in the south. Cool to mild.
Yep, Showers tending to rain, Snowfalls in the hills and Cool to cold with strong squalls ... They may be lucky to bowl a ball on Tuesday! :-|

Well McGrath has changed his mind and decided to retire as well! There will be a huge hole in the Australian team to fill with those 2 gone.

Glenn McGrath to retire from cricket
Saturday Dec 23 13:39 AEDT

Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath has announced he will retire from cricket after next year's World Cup tournament.

The move means McGrath's home Test match early next month at the SCG will be his last five-day game.

"It's probably a perfect or fitting ending," McGrath said.

Hmm not as bad as forecast although weather caused a couple of disruptions ...

(FWIW, it was the coldest Melbourne Xmas day on record).

Do people with prepaid tickets get a refund if the game finishes before the day of the ticket?

Meanwhile at the halfway point of the ashes test England look to be struggling to make it last into day 4.

I am a bit loath to make the following prediction due my doom and gloom weather warnings for the boxing day test (Post #267 Here) (even though they did loose an hour or two).

However, it's looking bit wet for Sydney as well, if not as cold; maybe this will prolong the result until the 5th day?
