SHould be over today? Sadly it will all be over today, the innings, the test and the series :(
Cook and Bell showing some fight.

Where is that rain when you need it?

What a day!!! There is a possibility that this might be a draw. the loss of cook was annoying and as I was ironing whilst it was on - I was bemused when I turned round and saw 5/250ish!!! Hadnt noticed the nightwatchman...

Well the match will see the 5th day after all and England only need 292 to win.

Where are those forecast showers Mark?

The clouds came in after play stopped for the day. But while there may be clouds there is nothing falling from them. Tomorrows forecast:

Forecast for Monday
Thundery shower or two, clearing late morning or early afternoon. Light/moderate S/SW winds, tending fresh near the coast in the afternoon.

So there is still some hope that the Ashes could be alive come tomorrow afternoon!

I would prefer that we win the Ashes in PER. Remember those times in the '50s and '80s when England flogged us? Put the foot on the throat and keep it there for as long as possible.

I was only born in the early 70's so my recollection of England Ashes wins is thin at best - so I googled and got the wiki. Not sure if this will work but the results historically have been:

Mind you it only starts from the time ENgland first lost to Australia...

I was born in the 60's and I do remember the lean times in the 80's.

I was nine years old when the Australian tour of the UK took place in 1956. About the only time I ever saw my father cry was the test where Laker took 19 wickets and the only time I ever saw him cough-faced was when we won the ashes back under Richie Benaud in 1958-59. I felt sorry for Allan Border when he took over the captaincy in the mid '80s and we went down with little more than a whimper, but I felt really pleased when he enjoyed success in 1989. The 2005 Ashes series was a lot closer than most people are prepared to admit. After all, one result was a 3 run win to England and the other England victory was also close. There was a lot of hype because of the rare England series victory. I was impressed with the Aussies' attitude immediately afterwards in the World XI series. The determination to erase that Ashes loss in this series has been clear since then.

They were dark times for Australian cricket. I may have shed a tear once or twice. Getting through World Series cricket, the retirement of Chappell, Lillee and Marsh, the rebel tours of South Africa were tough times indeed. AB still ended up with batting average of 50+.

When AB retired in 1994 I remember seeing a poster in one of the newspapers with the faces of all the Australian cricketers he played with in the same test team. I don't know what the exact number was but it was somewhere between 50-70. I would be surprised if there has been 30 Australian test cricketers in the last 12 years.

Australia is a very dominant cricket side but the quality of the opposition has to be questioned. England has showed that they can match it with the Australians for short spells and England did very well to get to 350 today although still comprehensively beaten.

In 2005 England had Vaughan, Trescothick and Strauss in good form, Steve Harmison bowling at his best and the biggest difference between the 2 teams I felt was Simon Jones with his reverse swing. As you know 3 of those players have not been involved this series, Harmison has lost his action and Strauss has had a few tough calls.

This has been a tough series. I do think though that this could be a great side. They are all young (and I am not using that as an excuse or complaining that the aussies are all old - the results speak for themselves) and I think they have time to develop. If they can play some quality opposition over the next couple of years until the next ashes series in England that will be competitive. It almost shows an element of strength in the development of the game with players coming through. I would be concerned for the australians that there going to be an element of rebuilding in the next couple of years to get an experienced side together.

FYI, since the start of 1995 there have been 35 australian cricketer.

In the same period there have been 63 English cricketers.

Well that's what happens with a fading memory. :(

Where did you look up the information? Cricinfo? Interesting to see whether I remembered the right number when I quoted 50-70 cricketers having played in the same team as AB.
