Cricket Test Series 2014: Australia v India

Something just does not compute!

Official attendance for MEL test 194k - that is a record for Australia v India test matches in Australia!

Like I said I wasn't referring to the MCG in isolation but the Test Match appeal in general. Which is why the ACA is looking at day/night test matches to increase numbers.

The previous record for attendance for Aus/Ind at MCG was 189k set two years ago.

This series of Tests is a once off year with timings impacted by the death of Phillip Hughes. The Boxing Day test is the only one thus far held over non work days.

Overall there are concerns about attendance numbers.

Fine to disagree. I think he was playing it safe. As did you when you said he wasn't declaring in order to win the series. :p

When mentioning crowds I wasn't being specific to MCG but test matches in general. ACA is worried.

I agree, whilst Melb has created a record (going to 5 days always helps); but look at BNE. I think you'll find numbers were down there, with the change of dates. I know the Qld Cricketers Club were down ~500 over the Test.

That's about $50K in ticket revenue and another $35K in F&B Revenue. Just for the QCC. Add to that the Gabba Trust as well as the Corporate Boxes, then the general admission and F&B.

I understand the ACA are paying/reimbursing some $ due to the change of dates.

Test cricket needs to be inventive and day/night matches are one way to increase numbers particularly when the touring sides are NZ and the Windies. There are many competitors for the disposable dollar. While it has TV support here, in England and particularly in India it will survive and thrive. Having sat through three of the days at the ground and the other two on TV this has been a great match and no harm has been done to test cricket by this match even if it ends in a draw.

Changing the dates on short notice, for whatever reason, is certainly going to affect attendance. I was going to Brisbane but had to cancel because of the change.

And that is why crowds are down for test matches. Playing a game for a draw to achieve a series win. Because they aren't confident winning in Sydney?

Crowds are down? New record set this match for an aus v ind match in Aus.

Similar, I had to change from 3 days to only 1, and reduced my guests from 2 to 1. Loss of 4 days dining as well.

Maybe read all my posts about this...just to put my comments in context. ;)

It's like saying a hot summers day is due to global warming.

They called it off with four overs to go? Weird.

My son had booked to fly from Sydney to Adelaide but had to cancel due to work. Qantas wouldn't refund the fare - a cheapie.

Given we were in "extended time", the captains can bring the game to a mutually agreed end at any time in the final 15 overs if they agree there is unlikely to be a result. The previous 9 overs only got 1 wicket

Good to know that Australia has so many captains waiting in the wings. :)

The witch hunt has begun from the armchair critics:

Australia vs India Boxing Day Test at MCG: live scoreboard, scores, highlights, video

Looks like I was right in my assessment:

Smith said the decision to keep batting was made so India had no chance of winning the game, rather than allowing Shaun Marsh (run out for 99) time to make a century.

Harris understood why fans were frustrated with the finish.“You could say it was disappointing,” Harris told ABC Radio.
“We wanted to win the series. The question is going to be did we bat for too long?
“The wicket was pretty good for batting. We didn’t want to give India a sniff. A draw’s a draw but we win the series.”

I have to agree. To have gone into the last Test 2-1 up meant that India, if they could win in Sydney, could have ended the series 2-2.

Sorry, don't give them a chance is the correct option. A draw won us the series. 'nuff said :D
