Cruising choices with an active Pandemic

Think it's more to do with the backpacker cell - two parties in Bondi and Darlinghurst have been identified as big spreaders and then you've got dorm style backpacker accommodation.

A tough group to deal with as they are mostly young and bullet proof, can't afford isolated accommodation and with retail and casual jobs gone can't earn much at all

Is social distancing that hard a concept for cruise passengers to understand?

Is air conditioning as a genre , safe ?

A mechanical engineer explains why cruise lines are so prone to spreading the coronavirus and why hospital ships are safer :

Interesting but there's plenty of evidence that covid19 on Diamond and Ruby Princess was spread by crew. On Diamond, by crew who were not washing their hands between contacts with the pax being kept in isolation. When CDC realised that, it immediately got the charter flights back to US organised and then other govts followed suit to evacuate the pax. On Ruby, according to NSW Health anyway, everyone who boarded on 8 March was virus free and everyone who contracted covid19 on the cruise that started on 8 March caught it either directly or indirectly from a crew member who didn't not realise s/he was sick.

It has to be crew, doesn't it. And didn't they swap a crew member to a different ship in recent times and both ships ended with having Covid cases?
At least those Vasco passengers are going to be in WA lockdown and then SA lockdown. I'm very pleased that people are being housed in secluded places because obviously the numpties have ruined self isolation for those who abide by the conditions.

There are currently 11 cruise ships idling off NSW and four off WA of which at least two have passengers.
Waverley and the Northern Beaches are Sydney's two hotspots which both have the majority of backpackers housed being Bondi and Manly.
My niece this week abandoned living in Manly as she couldn't believe how irresponsible they were behaving and was very concerned for her 5yo.

A mechanical engineer explains why cruise lines are so prone to spreading the coronavirus and why hospital ships are safer :

Sorry I missed this before. The article is wrong. Is air conditioning as a genre , safe ? = YES

Properly designed and constructed AC does not spread coronaviruses.

Yes hospitals have better AC than ships or average buildings. But hospitals are concerned about many things, and many diseases. The AC is hospitals will also vary depending on what part of the hospital it is. ie for diseases that have true aerosol transmission like measles or CV 19 IF there are invasive procedures occurring with the patient. ie Intubation.

Now diseases can be a problem with AC. But it is mainly bacteria driven ones that can occur on some types of AC (particularly large evaporatitive) when bacteria driven diseases like Legionnaires can occur. There are various ways to control this. Some are chemical and there are other ways. As I am involved in training those that maintain large buildings (this is all types including hospitals, aged care, offices aquatic centres) including all building services including AC I spoke at length here in Melbourne with a Singaporean based company last November who had developed a new system to prevent Legionarres in large AC systems. Monitoring how Building Services should be operated and maintained is something that I have been with involved with for over a decade.

As I have reported earlier with SARS there was one well researched building where air transmission did occur of SARS in a cluster. This however had faulty sewer risers and fans that were fans and that were improperly installed by the occupants in their bathrooms/toilets which in essence blew that contaminated air short distances fro the contaminated sewer risers with the apartment.

So if you live or work in a building with a properly designed and maintained AC please do not panic or fear it with respect to Covid 19.

With Covid 19 what you need to watch, as is now well known, is to take care with transmission from hard surfaces such as doorknobs etc in public areas. Wash your hands regularly. Avoid being cough on, and maintain minimum of 1.5m spacing.

Cruise ships:
  • Will have had on the ships infected persons wandering around spreading CV 19 (ie as with Diamond Princess where the source had been on the ship for an extended period before lockdown. Most likely too then further newly infected persons wandering around).
  • Fomite transmission from infected crew and re-use of trays, trolleys etc (Those in quarantine now normally will be given food in a way where things are disposed of and not re-used)

Now many things can be possible. But what is probable is a much smaller list.

PS: Corana viruses are not new. The flu kills 250-500,000 people every year. AC is built with the flu in mind. While there are differences between the flu and CV-19 it is currently thought that CV-19 is not normally spread as a true aerosol (ie can float) but is like the flu attached to a droplet (moisture or mucus) which causes it to sink and land on surfaces. Hence the 1.5m separation rule and also why it is not spread through ducted building AC as the total length of the ducts to draw the air in and then return it is quite lengthy.

That is so sad.It is about time someone came up with a plan for cruise ships.it really is criminal that people are basically being left to die on board as authorities dither.
Surely the Panama Canal pilot can come on board in a hazmat outfit and let the ship get through the canal.

So our PM seems to be leading the world on this-let them disembark and everyone into mandatory quarantine.

And in the case of one very affluent couple who had stayed in Aspen where they knew CV19 was rife proceed to on return disobey the isolation instruction to frequent public locations and services as most likely they simply regarded themselves as way too important to be bound by the rules that apply to others.

Reportedly too is that they are said to have avoided testing in Aspen as they did not want to be restricted.

Ruby continues to give. Sadly this time, the Crew.

Finally got to all (hopefully) the newsletters I get daily , weekly, periodically advertising cruise specials.

Right now I don't want to be even reminded or know that cruise ships exist let alone unrealistic expectations things will be honky dory and perfectly safe in 3 months time. 😞

My emails have dried up except for one from CE Celebrity telling me how safe cruises are.

The only saving grace in a situation like this is that the crew would hopefully not have many people as a % in the higher risk categories that will much more likely to be become critical. Unlike the passengers of many cruise ships who have a high proportion of such a population.

Just some thoughts about cruising in the future. We have been cruising for 25 years and it’s been a big part of our life in retirement.

But I cannot imagine any cruise ship taking on any passengers or crew that haven’t had a clearance saying that they have had COVID19. No way could they risk a passenger or crew getting sick on one of their ships.

Then there is the issue of travel insurance. What passenger could risk cruising with the exclusion of pandemics in their policy unless that had had the virus and knew they wouldn’t be getting it again.

All these things going round in my head as to what will become of cruising and cruise companies in the future.

Would love to hear what others posters think about this.

I look on the not so pessimistic side.If a vaccine is found that works or if a trial using plaquenil to prevent Covid infection is positive then there is no reason to not cruise just because of Covid.Though those things wont be around for at least a year.
