Cuts to duty free cigarette limts from 1 September

I thought the incoming passenger card had a question asking about a specific amount of cigarettes. Pretty tough pleading ingorance if you've answered a question!

Depends how quickly they update the card really...

Interesting to see if you can buy more than two packs anywhere around the world, physically and willingly. No doubt this thread will be constantly updated.

Don't understand why the allowance isn't zero!

Why? Cigarettes are a legal product. The government is on a slippery slope here...what benefit Are we going to lose next? Alcohol allowance? Duty free threshold? Maybe they will also significantly increase taxes related to flying.

This is a political stunt.

Don't really see the logic in this, being a legal product and being allowed to buy it duty free are quite different. There are many things I can't buy duty free are have limits but are still legal. Personally I think the opposite, having specific limits for tobacco and cigarettes is the thing that is anachronistic.

The government has a clearly stated policy on smoking. Hardly a political stunt! If you can't understand why cancer sticks are targeted spend 30 minutes out the front of a hospital. Observe the extremely ill people, some of whom are missing limbs, out the front getting their fix.

Alcohol, unlike cancer sticks, does not effect all people the same way. It can be enjoyed in moderation.

I don't condone smoking, but in the same instance, the government is out of control with their anti smoking policy. I agree - no public areas, but banning [effectively] the sale of cigs incoming into Australia? Really.

With the decreased revenue from cig sales, what's going to happen next, of course the next biggest seller - booze, will increase in price to counter the loss from the cigs. With the absolute BS LAGS rules being applied into AU due to brilliant lobbying by the DF companies, everyone will suffer not just the smokers.

The sooner this country gets some common sense toward solving problems instead of the only way they seem to know how - the Robin Hood Syndrome, the better.

Begone Labor I say, Begone and employ some business leaders to govern instead of the no-hopers there now. :|

 This doesn't ban the sale of smokes coming into Australia. You can bring in as many smokes as you like, provided you pay the tax on them. :|

I'll see if it has been updated when I fly back in on Monday morning.

New rule doesn't impact me directly, but I can't help but wonder what will be next.

I did sort of notice that, fair point well made. I'm not sure it is there yet. But the benefit is now minimal, 2 packets, otherwise just buy in Oz.

Depending on how it is calculated maybe there are still savings to be had getting these extremely cheap smokes in Asia or Africa or south america or wherever they are ultra cheap.

If they had an allowance of zero, it would mean that the half smoked pack you'd purchased would attract duty and as such you'd need to pay duty on importing 10 ciggies.

Whats there to wonder, alcohol will be next, purely because not many people import a weeks supply of mcdonalds bugers and fries with them when they enter the country.

While we're talking about how bad cigarettes are, what about alcohol? It causes much more pain and suffering in Australia than cigarettes ever did. How many wives get bashed every night because of alcohol? Why not ban alcohol and save the nation heaps? (and I do know the answer).

Alcohol does lower inhibitions of people true, but I'm of the opinion that a person who is inclinde to violence as much as anything else will simply use alcohol as the excuse.

I've known a couple of people who are violent (friends of friends at a party), and I can assure you they where that way before they even took their first drink of the night.

I have seen people turn violent without their hit of nicotine (and whatever other nasties are in there)

I would expect the two pack limit is for pax who smoke so that they can bring in the current pack they are smoking from otherwise they would have to potentially dump a pack at the airport.

Maybe so, but recalling from my inhaling days, I don't recall the open pack I was 'using' being counted as part of the DF allowance, just any cartons I was bringing in.

I suspect (speculation only of course) that they were not game to ban it (DF importation) completely as it would have raised a helluva stink. Better to leave a token amount so no-one can blame them for being draconian (much).

We just came through MEL, not a tobacco product in sight at duty free. Can't say I looked in SYD as I fought my way through perfume to the F Lounge...
