Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

So, I was deeply worried I might not buy anything during the current black friday sales... panicked and bought some of this guy from TWC as a friend had asked me to get some barossa shiraz. Broke my usual rule of making sure I know precisely what I'm getting, which was pretty pathetic. Pretty sure it's either Z Wines Poole Shiraz or Z Wines Plowman Shiraz.

Anyone able to work out which it is, and can anyone report any good or bad experience with these?

(I suppose I should worry a little when the Stelzer review says it will cellar in the short term - what kind of Barossa shiraz is that?)

I believe that it is Z Wines Plowman Shiraz
"A classic expression of Barossa shiraz from the heart of the region, drinking confidently now and with the potential to hold for the short term.
TYSON STELZER - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION" is the hint.

Here is one review I found for 2016 - ended up grabbing a few using the generous TWC coupon.

This is the complete package, from it’s cork finish and black wax capsule to the sleek, elegant label… but most importantly the wine in the bottle is exceptional.

As the name suggests the wine was produced from unirrigated vines with the wine aged in 60% new oak (50% French, 50% American). The wine has intensity but maintains an understated elegance with the potential to grow into something truly special in years to come.

An Inky yet youthful dark red in the glass with purposeful plum and raspberry fruit that’s intertwined with generous oak spice and balanced by a touch of fresh earth.

A wine that is light on it’s feet, but has an impactful punch. The concentration that builds across the journey with pristine dark berry fruits interjected by vanillin spice. The tannins are commensurate to the wines other faculties and give the perfect frame to support an embellishment of cherry cola and kirsch before the long dark fruited finish.

Dan Murphy's App has some good deals on it for Black Friday Sales which will go for another week

Remarkable State sparkling shiraz is certainly no gimmick, to say the least. The depth of dark fruit, bramble and tannins make it taste a class act and a steal at a tenner. Many thanks to earlier proponents.
I have had one only of the Remarkables and thought it was superb. Five remain. The level of complexity is certainly why the normal retail is $38 but for a tenner, great stuff. So on a similar theme and isn't it funny how you look for the same varietal and style after you realise what a bargain the first one was, (Remarkables really ) I received a case(12) of Patritti Shiraz Cuvee on Friday to sample last night together with 4 proseccos. There was only one review out there, so a little pensive at first, but remembering that their ethereal liquor muscat as a potential quality throughout the range type I landed the case delivered thru Grays for $44 a case, plus extras, net about a little over five bucks a bot. So how was it? The one review I found summed it up. It punches well above the normal retail easy. Seriously recommended folks but do not cause a stampede. My case is enough for me . What I did not want to find was an overly sweet, simple wine that would not stack up to the recent Remarkable. This one is a red wine lovers bubbly. Fine bubbles, great flavour, body 8.5/10 yet you knew you had a refreshing smart wine. Good is good but I think this is better than good especially the amazing value.

I'd be happy with that - of the two Z Wine premium shirazes the Plowman sounds more interesting, and I tend to like dry grown shiraz... I just couldn't find anywhere that the Stelzer review was matched up with a particular wine (even thought I've got a winecompanion subscription..). Did you actually find a link with that statement and the Plowman? Maybe I botched the search!

Ed - OK - yes, I'm dumb! Searched for 'Z Wines'. Now I search for Z Wine it all comes up, including that Tyson gave it only a 91! Blergh, plenty of good plonk out there for this price bracket so I'm hoping we just like different stuff. Interesting that he says drink by 2023, but the TWC site says 2036. Looks like something one would have been a bit sad to have paid $120 for (not that I ever would)!

I have received the following email from Bobby Caillard - to get these prices - you need to email Bobby direct ie DO NOT buy via the website.

I bought both 2017 Mataro and Shiraz. I enjoyed Mataro more. Both wines are made in more elegant and subtle style, so do not expect a fruit bomb.

Dear Friend of Caillard Wine

I won’t mention the C word but it’s only 33 sleeps away! Summer is around the corner, restrictions are lifted, and all those thirsty rellies will soon be over to celebrate. It’s time to stock up with the wines you love.

We’re still selling delicious Caillard Wine at exceptional value: $114 for a six-pack of single vintage and variety - delivered to your door. With on-line sales in general expected to be at an all-time high this Christmas (oops, I said it) and courier deliveries taking longer than usual please order as early as possible *(see below for last orders)

We have available:

Caillard Mataro 2016 and 2017

Caillard Shiraz 2017

And... for the first 30 orders of a dozen, or more, I’ll include a hardcopy edition of the latest Penfolds Rewards of Patience, signed by the author Andrew Caillard, who is also the producer of Caillard Wine (and my husband!). (That’ll be one Christmas (oops, it slipped out again) present sorted. Even if it’s for yourself!

And……. to celebrate the festive season we will also release a limited number of six-packs of our museum stock at the same price of $114 if you add it to another 6-pack of the above wines. These ‘Lucky Dip Packs” will include a randomly mixed box of our previous vintages of Mataro and Shiraz from 2009 to 2014 ** - too good to miss.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks so much for posting this @olympicwiz. Had been eyeing their wines off at $22/btl and had to take the plunge at $19/btl. 2017 Mataro + museum release for me. Will I regret not ordering a Shiraz pack... yes I already do, but the line has to be drawn somewhere. Cheers!

Could not care less for his ratings - only useful to identify the secret deal.
I remember Tyson starting out on the Auswine Forum in the late 90's, early 2000's. Although his family background is Barossa, he's mainly made his name with Champagne. He managed to cause a fair stir with his low scores (compared to previous years) for some/many Barossa reds on his first year as chief editor and area lead for Barossa. Dave Brookes has now been added to the WC tasting team taking over Barossa from Tyson.

Odd I got nothing from TWC despite buying plenty over the years. If anyone has a voucher they aren't going to use PM me!
You must have been lucky. My email said up to $50 discount for $100 spend, the voucher was worth $10 when I got to checkout.

Yeah, I grabbed The Standish for $60
I got a $50 voucher and used it for some champagne.

I thought the same but then scanned all the deleted mails I had from them this week, it was hidden in one of those.

I just went back over all the emails they sent me this week. Nothing at all in terms of a voucher. Disappointed as I’ve actually spent a lot with them this year.

Cashrewards 15% (Max $40) at Vintage Cellars and 20% off onsite with vip20. Picked up a vintage Pol Roger and a St Henri for $205 precashback and Cellarshare points. Net $165 or so.

Edit: $20 for spending $200 not 20% onsite as noticed by later posters
