Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

I use the Le creuset wine opener TM100 and find that it works really well, as I can slowly turn to pull the cork out.
I think this works well too, but somehow for old corks, I seemed to stuff it up using this - I think I'm not skilled enough to use it properly. 😂.

Likewise, I seem to shave some of the cork or end up pushing in the half that has snapped
The secret is to use the Ah-So right from the start, or if you use a corkscrew first, stop at the first hint of any breakage/crumbling. For crumbly corks you might get a few shavings in the wine even if you go straight to the Ah-So, but that's better than a lot of crumbly cork in there or a chunk that's hard to remove.

I received a Durand as a gift. It's so much better than an Ah-So. It solves that issue with soft old corks that get pushed into the bottle. Pricing is on the expensive side, so a nice thing to ask for as a gift. I suspect you can probably find a cheap knock-off on the internet too.

If you need to justify the cost, just think about how much you're going to spend on wine during your life time. Is the ~$200 for an item that is going to help with enjoyment really that much of big deal? A Durand should last you a life time.

Still about $120 more than they should be charging. I looked for these maybe a year ago and the knockoffs weren't around yet. Give it another 6-12 months and they'll be on there for $15
First posted on my Forum in late May, not sure of the price then.

I’d been thinking about buying one of these for the past few months, so quite timely all these comments. I’m reading them with a lot of interest …

Agree with the logic, which is why I was looking at buying one - though on the flipside, under the cellar has enough depth and bottle age the Durand isn't really needed. However, similar could be said of glassware and not everyone is on super lights (although I broke two this week)!

Then again opening a winery direct 1970 and 1980 bottle soon...

How do they compare to the genuine one?

I bought some knockoff Ah-So's of Wish for $3 planning to gift them and they wouldnt pull a cork (I have had one of the Peters of Kensington ones for 4-5 years and it is great)

Yea the cheap ones are useless yet I can’t justify the fancy stuff as I don’t have too many super aged wines in the cellar. hopefully someone will develop good enough knockoff soon 😛

I also own one of the Durand corkscrews. I was able to use a gift voucher from work as I was a little sceptical about the value it provides, but in hindsight, I'd probably spend my own money too.

I don't open a huge number of older wines, but when I do, it performs flawlessly.. even 40+ yr old bottles.

Having said that, I also use it on younger bottles. The build quality of the tool is so high, that it actually becomes a pleasure to use. I've learned that investing in good tools that last a long time is a good idea, and I think the durand absolutely falls into that category

Sweetly aromatic and inviting, the bouquet shows ripe cherry, smoked game, mushroom, olive and hazelnut characters, followed by a beautifully rounded palate offering excellent concentration and flow. Bugger. I went on the below from Bob Campbell matching the Estate Pinot.

"Intense, elegant pinot Noir with black cherry, black doris plum, wood-smoke, anise and nutty oak flavours supported by a backbone of ripe, gently peppery tannins and juicy acidity. Accessible and attractive now, but with cellaring potential". 95 Points Anon
