Framingham Nobel Riesling is available through MyWineGuy atm for $30 in a 6. Seriously think about it!

I DO NOT drink sweet wines ever, nor does my partner. But we got a glass to share on the recommendation of a manager at Two Chefs in Dunedin. Amazing, seriously next level.

4 or so weeks later we went to the cellar door in Marlborough and it again was fantastic (Framingham in general stole the show for the region's cellar doors).

Bought a bunch at $40/btl after smiling our way to free shipping to Australia. So decent deal imo as it will be hard to come by here.

Thanks RB. I saw that rating too, but know there are some Magill Estate fans (like Dr Ralph) that may have tried the 11 more recently than Halliday, and thought it more worthy of the $89 price and higher than the 94 point score given after more bottle time.

Not sure if you have seen the other Penfolds offerings on Langtons Buy Now, but none jumped out as well priced or worth a buy for the Magill Competition they are also currently running (which does look an amazing prize). Shame, I would have jumped if they had more keenly priced or bundled these.

There is always a reason for the bigger discount.
I didn't look too closely at the offer, I'm firmly "post-Penfolds", I don't think any of their Bin reds and above are worth the asking price or even the discounted street price. From hundreds of bottles of Penfolds in my cellar I'm down to 18 now, mostly St Henri picked up from clear-out sales.

Penfolds are not the only once-regular buys that have dropped off my buying list in the last 10 years as they ramped up prices. I've not found any difficulty in finding adequate replacements in my mostly under $50 buying range.

How do you think they afford to run competitions like this?

I have almost given up with Cellar Tracker, AC. It's very clunky and buggy from my initial experience. But I guess you have a more critical eye when you try something new. I'm sure I'll learn to live with its foibles. I have managed to upload a few of my recent notes and about half of my wines - the older ones.

I'm sure I'll learn to live with its foibles. I have managed to upload a few of my recent notes and about half of my wines - the older ones.

I've only started using Cellar Tracker over the last week, and it does take some getting used to. But now that I'm more familiar with it I am beginning to enjoy it. I did find the web interface very confusing at first, but once you learn where all the short-cuts are it doesn't feel quite as clunky. Just keep at it for a while longer and hopefully it will start to make sense.

Yes, Penfolds is so last century. I was a big fan of them in the 80's & 90's but they have just not changed with the times. They are too old-school for me, and I'm almost an old-fart myself now...

Are you using the app or the web interface?

The web interface has a few oddities to get used to, but the home page has a great dashboard IMHO - all your wines, reviews from others of the wines you hold etc. And just about everything is one click away - my usual link is the "wine in my cellar" link in the top left, after which I choose "Summarize by", to go quickly to varietal, year, location, whatever.

My problem with Penfolds is that back in the late 60's, early 70's the Bin series and even those above were much more affordable (relative to incomes at the time). We used to buy 389 by the case (well under $10pb) and use it as a "control wine" in blind tastings.

Penfolds reds were a staple, regular buy for many years into the mid-late 90's, the wines were good and still reasonably priced, e.g. Bin 389 1996 for $18.80, Bin 707 1991 for $35. In the late 90's they started ramping up in price, but I don't think the quality was any better than the good vintages of the 80's and 90's. So I started buying less and then pretty much stopped buying them.

The counter argument is that they were under-priced, under-valued for many years (throw in a random "on a global basis"). Maybe there is a small element of truth in that, but now the premium Penfolds lines are just priced and marketed as a luxury item, way too far up that exponential qpr curve for me. (QPR = Quality / Price Ratio)

So, go ahead all of you with more money than me, support all those shareholders and marketeers, I'll buy from the smaller producers with much less overheads and drink wines that are as good or better for a price I can afford.

I'm one of the fools who spends too much on some Penfolds wines (but only about a dozen a year and I only started a few years ago) as I learn more about what I like and what else is available maybe that will change. I like 389 and St Henri, I know because I could taste a single bottle from my local BWS bottle shop that has a range that is less than many AFFers personal cellars - no DM, no VC, no CM No specialist wine merchants where I live to sample and find out what I like. I love the knowledge shared on AFF and the VM return policy that lets me try new wines risk (IMO) free.

I am not a huge fan of Penfolds. Many are over priced for what you get.

Big call.

407, 389, St Henri and Magill are quality wines. Bringing them out at dinner parties is an instantly recognisable pleasure for many guests.

Whilst I agree that their prices have increase significantly over the last decade, it would be imprudent to dismiss them on this basis alone.

389 at around $50 is great value.

St Henri at around $75 is always a buy for me.

These wines and other Penfolds will remain a fixture in my cellar.

Doctor you beat me to it - redbigot with a bit of work you can secure 389 from Dan's ~$50 and RWT ~$100 - interested to hear some suggestions from you of comparable substitutes to these 2 Penfolds wines at around same price point.

I'm down to my last 3 of these It was the last case of Penfolds wine I bought - after that my kids started to get expensive, as did these wines.
