Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

They've been on my 'to try' list for quite some time. Are you a fan Kev?
I’ve got some 2018 The Redhead (good but still young) and 2020 Contrarian that I’m yet to try. The Blonde gets good reviews so I thought it was worth a punt vs some of the other deals around in the $30 price range.

Head wines are generally good wines. I'd buy if the price was 25%+ discounted (travelling O/s at present so can't buy anything - suitcase filling with Rioja at present)

How's the Coppermine if you've had it before? Tempted great price.

I took a punt based on the Huon Hooke Review below. I would say it would need at least another 5 years of the bottle ageing.
I had an entry level D'Arenberg High Trellis Cab Sav 2021 and thought that it was superb
Might try a bottle over the weekend

Concentrated colour; dense and opaque, with a tinge of purple remaining, the intensity of the colour reflected on the bouquet which is powerful, multi-layered and dense, and the palate which is massive. Huge tannins and impenetrable depths of concentrated flavour—like a demiglaze sauce, mellow and developed yet still very bold, firm and upright. Massive tannins demand hearty protein, or cellaring. Or both. A striking and very full-bodied cabernet that promises to have a long and glorious life. 12 JAN 2024 Drink 2026–2039

Alcohol alone doesn’t scare me. I thought that Warrabilla Parola Durif 2015 was one of the best wines that I had and it is 17% alc.

But Jeanneret RnF is just a massive wine. Unless they moderated the style now.
They cut the 2016 back to 14.9% and it wasn't the same, others since have been 15.5-16.0%. A regular favourite with some of my Monday Tasting Group most vintages. Thanks for the link, just bought a dozen to share around.

Warrabilla reds including Parola's aren't quite the same these days as they have been picking a little earlier and going for less extract. Still big, but not quite so warm and cuddly.

BTW, how do you get on the VIP list at Grays?

I think I bought about 10 cases of Cimicky Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon 2017 and 2018 for myself and friends and received a call from a broker there offering some wines direct. I asked him to put me on their direct emailing list.

I think I had 2015 Jeanneret. Such polarising wine - some people hated it but some absolutely loved it. I did buy 2016 but stopped after that.

Would be interesting to know what 2021 is like

Yeah, Rank & File is that sort of love/hate wine. Most of my Monday group are not afraid of big alcoholic wines, although many don't buy a lot of them these days.

Hmm, might have to give Gray's a call or dig out my past emails with one of the wine managers. I would buy more than 50 cases of wine a year there, probably 100 if you count 6-packs, mostly to go into quaffer packs for friends, but some other stuff for myself as well. But I don't usually work with brokers as they never quite work out what it is I like and just keep pushing what they have to sell.

Wooo! I've managed to resist!! This is a moment... Darenberg was once a total favourite but I haven't super-loved the last few, even when sold with a bit of age, and you can get some very decent plonk for $28 then days.

(Said the guy who bought HUNTER RED for that much and is now wrestling himself to just stop for a moment, using some very thin rationalisations and self-justification tactics).

By the way, is there any Chardonnay deal from Grays? My friend is looking for good Chardonnay deals.
