Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

At Porongurup Castle Rock make some of the best whites in Australia.
I thought it was a bit cool to make great reds but I've been proven wrong many times before.

Could the wine market secret wine 2013 Coonawarra Merlot be Leconfield?

Leconfield uses a combination of French and American oak. Also RRP doesn't match.

Penly Gryphon Coonawarra Merlot 2013 is 20 months in French-only oak, which matches the description. RRP also matches

Dragon Fly Shiraz and Chardonnay at the Perth Hyatt wine tasting were pretty good.
They come from the Ferguson Valley in WA and are handled by Willow Bridge.
Their overnight success took about 20 years.
A great tasting....

Bought from Dan in mid May a deal named The Thief? Shiraz 2013 at $75 a case of six, no details could be found on the internet, but as the price is right, I jumped on it. When I received the case, the wine was indeed made by Tash Mooney with the very same 13.9 % alcohol as Fox Gordon Eight Uncles. I tried it last night, the wine is very similar to FG Eight Uncles, from my memory, The Thief may be a bit better.

This deal is not for everybody, but given Torbreck wines generally vary little from RRP Torbreck's Runrig 2004 can be had at vintage cellars for $187/btl delivered at the moment. $220 headline price (itself supposedly a clearance price), but there are triple points for members this weekend which equates to $33 back as cellar shares to re-invest instore later. I daresay this wine would be in its prime drinking window from now...

This was the last sentence on an email from Cullen Wines today - anyone have some inside knowledge?

Yes, only $235.25 each
Mate, did I read recently that you have only tried one white in your life? Wine that is. Well the Cullen wouldn't be a bad second would it. Problem is, the third to the eleven hundredth(should you get the taste) will taste like lolly water.
$235.25 buys a lot of Maverick doesn't it !

Has anyone tasted the following? Thoughts?

Dukes Vineyard Magpie Hill Reserve Cabernet 2014

Not tried this vintage but previous ones very good. For me, their shiraz is even better and the riesling top of the pile. RRP is bull, it's $30 direct from winery and always has been.

Cheers

Dave

2015 Mystery 97 Point WA Riesling $21.99 @ Cracka Wines (less with $25 referral and $20 AmEx offer) = 2015 Duke's Vineyard Magpie Hill Reserve Riesling :)

Firstly, just to add my 2 cents that yep, Cellarmasters are woeful. The BS handling fee alone is reason not to use them (wine doesn't magically transport from winery to glass without 'handling'!). I can understand people wanting to use them because of this particular 'deal', but you're seeing exactly why they're reputation is shocking. Never, ever expect an order with Cellarmasters to be real until you have the wine (that you actually ordered!) in your hands.

agree re handling fee - nobody else charges one afaik

the orders i placed with the recent $100 voucher code were received :)

however, with a previous order, cellarmasters weren't aware that it hadn't been received until i contacted them, only to eventually discover that it had been damaged in transit - besides a refund, they gave me a new $50 voucher code to replace the one originally used

I will dropping into the east doncaster store

i miss nicks' former stores in armadale and the cbd...

iirc a while ago you also had lunch in the yarra valley and dinner in kew?

have there been any melbourne meetups like the sydney ones?

who else around here is in melbourne?

I haven't been to any Melbourne meetups yet qaz. Interestingly, I was back at nicks to pick up some more reds last week. Also in their bargain bin I spotted at a tenner a chardonnay with a great label, one I could not help resist buying. The Fat cough chardonnay. Beautifully named with a story attached. This matches a wine someone gave me recently called The Black Pig. That one seemed to be a Virgin airline promoted wine and it was a lovely McLaren Vale shiraz. Great notes on assorted wines can be found at the Nice Wines thread here at AFF.

The Virgin Wines club is run by Laithwaites Wine People, the local offshoot of the UK (sort of) equivalent of Cellarmasters. They have quite a number of exclusive labels made for them by mainly small producers, not the big "factory" setup of Cellarmasters.

Thanks. I have been a member of Laithwaites for about three years and mainly buy their end of year packs. That group of 6 reds provides stunning value with attested pedigree. It included a Lloyd Shiraz, netting down to about $22 a bottle amongst others. Throw in a Cherubino, and the Arthurs reserve from Lake Breeze and you get seriously good wines. Their own batch stuff from Red Heads can be a little hit and miss but their customer service is fantastic. Similarly their introduction offers whereby they throw in 3 free on a dozen has worked well for me in the past. I was on the receiving end of a 3 dozen red wine credit, about eight hundred clams when one of my wines was delivered with 'random oxidization" . Twas the Blackstrapp. They happily credited me with the money , most of which I tipped back into those end of year six packs. Can't fault them.
