Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

If anyone is a fan of Sister's Run they have a $120 mixed dozen deal on at the moment.

I've always quite enjoyed their wines, might grab a case for some easy midweek drinking.

Sister's Run - Mixed Red and White Wines Dozen

I've tried a couple of Sisters Run vintages as it gets positive views as a bargain deal at ozb, however, I don't rate it. Tastes like pretty average plonk to me. $10 / bottle can net much better. Shame too, as I've liked many of Elena Brooks' other ventures.

The 2016 (or any vintage) Eden Valley Riesling by Vickery doesn't appear to exist in Sydney and I can't afford to wait for it to be shipped from SA. The 2015 Watervale is stocked by a few BWS stores and by Dan Murphy's. Unless anyone has any other ideas I'll probably get the 2015 Watervale.

The other week I did pick up a few bottles of the 2014 Devil's Ridge Block 5 Riesling from Kemenys but I haven't tried it yet. Maybe I should give that a go first?

IMHO Vickery worth a crack!

I didn't realise that was her. I've never tried those myself, but like you I would've if I'd known of that association. The winery write-up by Halliday (Sister's Run Wine & Winery | Australian Wine Companion) makes a clever fist of implying rather indirectly that the label is more marketing- than quality-driven.

Interested to hear what your thoughts are on better $10/bottle wines, if you had anything specific and current in mind. It seems to me you have to be a bit careless to get a bad wine for $14, but at the $10 price point it's a rather fraught business: What's on sale at any given time is so young that nobody of note has reviewed it yet, (or the reviewers deliberately misplaced the samples they were sent, so as to avoid having to taste them), and so inconsistent that you can't rely on a label at all. (De Bortoli Vat 1 Durif comes to mind as something that's had a few decent years in a row. Not spectacular by any means, but no serious flaws. Kingston Estate Cabernet had a couple of spectacular years in 08 and 09 where it could be had for $8.50 and beat the hell out of most $20 Cabernets, but I don't know what it's like these days.)

Just received an email from Vintage Cellars offering 2014 Teusner The Independent Shiraz Mataro - 3 for $60, plus bonus cellar share worth $25 for Cellar Club members. Effectively $11.67 a bottle, compared with $27 from winery! Seems like a great deal. Anyone tried the wine? I've enjoyed Mataro and Shiraz Mataro, but don't recall having this particular one, though I know Teusner is well regarded.

For $12 it would be a decent drink-now proposition. I'm not good at wine reviews but I'll try: Ripe dark fruit and lots of it, but only a slight hint of warmth, plenty of vanillin oak, just a wisp of tannin (it could do with a little more for my taste, but it's there), generous and rather moreish. The problem of course is that it isn't really $12 unless you find another good deal at Vintage Cellars later on, which may or may not happen. So you should probably discount the rebate in proportion to the standard Vintage Cellars markup.

True, you're not going to find decent $10 any day of the week, but it's not that tough with sites like this if you keep your ear close to the ground. Couple examples I can give within the last couple months are well known favourites...multiple deals with the name Maverick Twins on it (well under $10 with discounts through CM), and I reported on the Jeanneret Westward We Went rerun that was being discounted direct for $10 per bottle. With all of the deal sites these days I'm sure others could add to a recent list of value $10 buys.

You would only buy a bottle for about 12 dollars and try it. It's being flogged through First choice this Thursday for that sort of price. Vintages vary. I remember having it last year but have to go to the notes to discern whether it was the Cab or the Shiraz. At the time, I think I believed it was quite OK. Certainly not homogenized lolly water anyway, and at a twelve solo, last years was nice drinking. Unless my notes show something outstanding and it was the shiraz, I reckon an investment is needed.

It's only July, but for those of you interested, Tony Love published his Top 100 Wines for 2016 this week:

Tony Love’s Top 100 Wines for 2016 | The Advertiser

Also, in case you missed it in The Pinot Noir Thread, I posted [post=1480869]Jeremy Oliver's Australian Wine Annual 2016[/post]

Ray Jordan also announced his Top 100 Reds, judging Eddystone Point Pinot Noir 2014 best overall.

I called them about this and the guy was great. They let me get the discount by refunding me the 20% after I'd made the purchase. This may even mean I get the cash rewards on the full $165 too....

Nice :)

Dan's have 2012 Wills Domain Cuvee d'Elevage Cabernet Sauvignon for $35 on a delivery only deal.

Don't know the wine at all, although found a very glowing review of the 2011.

In case you missed it, Dr Ralph mentioned [post=1481248]earlier[/post] that OzBargain has a list of Dan's secret deals

Vickery's Watervale isn't rated as highly as Eden Valley

For a similar price, I suggest [post=1469159]Sons of Eden Freya Riesling 2015[/post], asking Different Drop to price match My Wine Guy or WineStar, plus another 10% off if it's your first order :)

[post=1466928]They have good service - effectively delivered from Sydney to Melbourne the next day[/post] :)

I probably trust AFF more than OzB :)

Assuming just reds...

Mike Press Shiraz - WineStar had 92-94pt 2013 for $9.99 last year

Also, McWilliam's Online Cellar Door apparently just had 92-95pt Evans & Tate Frankland River Shiraz 2011 for $7.92

Do you have a manual link to this one?

A quick scroll down his list, and I mean a very quick scroll and a quick stop shows a Jack cabernet . Well, well, well we all know how good their shiraz was, this seems ssspecial as well.

I had my first and only Eddystone Pinot 2013 last September and loved it. Was about $27 at dans, but like someone said, under thirty dollars gets you a very nice wine. I did stock up with a few.

Kemeny's was selling Eddystone 2013 under their hidden label for 17 bucks last year.

There's been some speculation (confirmed by at least one of the wine producers on WF) that Kemeny's Hidden Labels do not always get the same fruit as the proper label release. I've been steering clear ever since.
