Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

On the theme of wine the age of children. I am looking to.get 2x bottles for each of my children 's birth years being '08, 10 and 12. I am aiming around $100 per bottle and aim to cellar 20 years. Currently St Henri is frontrunner. Any advice appreciated.

I'm a big fan of the St Henri's due to price and quality so my personal opinion is that you can't go wrong there. They have been steadily going up in price over recent years. RWT is a little out of the price range you suggested.
Do you have a preference of the type of wine? If you want you could always go based on which region produced the best wines at that time. Based on Langton's vintage chart the 08, 10 and 12 were great years for Margaret River Cabernets, so you could start by looking at some great wineries there - Cullen, Larry Cherubino, Moss Wood, Vasse Felix etc..

I have not had any of these wines previously but understand the Wynns Cab Sav is very good so was probably going to go 2 of those, one of the Penfolds & one of the Wolf Blass Shiraz as a starting point. Anyone have any recommendations for the remaining 2 bottles, get one of each of those I have not selected so far or take an extra of those I have selected? Any advice is appreciated :)

A few suggestions to get you thinking;

2008 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier (Canberra District)
2010 Henschke Mt Edelstone Shiraz (Barossa Valley)
2012 Cullen Diana Madeline Cabernet Blend or Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon (Margaret River)

These all have screwcap closures and proven cellaring potential. Any wine you are contemplating cellaring for 20 years will need appropriate storage. I'm storing a few bottles for mates presently but do consider that the palates of the aforementioned children may not be sophisticated at 20-21 years of age. I trust you'll be able to mentor them:p.

Thanks Sedimental, but the intention is for these to be mummy and daddy's treat, the kids might get a sip if they ate lucky. My penfold promotion vintec wine fridge will take care of them.

Any Wendouree, Lakes's Folly Cabernets or Penfolds 389 would be my picks

I have several Penfolds Bin 2 in my cellar. First tried it in the SYD Int. JLounge and really enjoyed it. Can usually buy it in the high $20 range IIRC.

They are all very good wines. I've tasted them all. Apart from the Pendolds, I'd be confident that they'd cellar for at least 10 years. Probably the best value if the Wolf Blass.

Cracka have the 2013 Sons of Eden Marschall Shiraz for $21 a bottle (in a 6 pack). RRP $35. A new wine from Sons of Eden, so you wont find much info on it. Apparently only 400 cases made. You'll need to phone Cracka directly.

I've had several Sons of Eden before and visited them as part of the Artisans of Barossa establishment in 2013. Always great.

Got this My DM email today too. Struck me as reasonable value assuming you're in the market! All the wines can be bought for roughly $25ea if you shop around. So 6 x $25 = $150 making the No.1 $20. The deal was $170 if I recall? The No.1 was a VM deal @ $50 recently. On the face of it the wines are all ok & cellar-worthy assuming there are no dodgy vintages.

Bin 389 Cab Shiraz 2012 $58.95 in six pack.
I think it's good value for this 'baby grange'.

I stopped buying Bin 389 when it bettered the $30 mark. It's a great wine and I like an Aussie Cab/Shiraz but when do you really drink this style? If your like me it's not sitting down quietly and pontificating about it's nuances. The BBQ is fired up and your with friends. You'll get one glass full as you're pouring! Use to buy Yalumba's Signature too. Lindemann's Limestone Ridge is on VM For $35, Wolf Blass Grey Label $25. Sixty bucks can buy some stellar wine these days. And so can $20.

Thank you Buzzard, DrRalph & Sedimental for your replies. I guess it all depends on whether I think the Saltram is a big enough incentive to buy. BWS has the 30% off for 6 or more wines deal running at the moment so for curiosities sake I may go & do a price comparison without the Saltram.

Showing my age but I can remember getting 389 on deep discount for under $15 so yes it seems to be getting too expensive for me. Penfolds in generally seems to have ramped their prices in a market where in general price rises have been muted. In the period I'm thinking of there are plenty of good wines which have only gone up 50-100% at most vs 400 pc for Penfolds. In fact in general I think I'm paying less (inflation adjusted) than 20-25 years ago for better wine, not so for Penfolds.

Same here. I bought a few cases of $10-12 389 at a wine merchant at Spit Junction Mosman some years ago. I think the business was called "Farmers" or "Farmer Brothers".

Must be some old people here! Best I can do is some Penfolds BIN 28 which I got for around $12 in the late 1990's.

Penfolds have done some brilliant marketing in the past and now they can afford to sell their wines at premium. No doubt one can find similar quality at a cheaper price.
The main reason I agree to pay a bit more is the Penfolds label (sounds terrible, I know). In my business I sometimes need to give gifts to clients and (red) wine is always a popular gift. Unfortunately gifting a bottle of a less known brand (even if the wine is better) doesn't get the same appreciation as Penfolds, so I just keep buying, giving away most and keeping some for myself to enjoy.

I couldn't resist.

So did you mix it up or go straight?

Mix. Some Wynns shiraz and Wolf Blass cab sav. Works out a good price when you factor in wish card discount + cash back. I make it $16.60 a bottle for the Wynn's etc (allowing $50 for the No.1 which is close to the price it was offered for earlier this year via Vinomofo).

Also got a free wine cooler (valued at $9.90) for some reason as part of the deal????
