Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

It was a little more rudimentary but easier to navigate and hold searches imo.

Other's may say it's better now of course. I tend to use MW a little more nowadays.

I preferred the old format and don't buy as much as I used to........however picked up a shared 6 Hares Chase Ironscraper for $12++ last week, after Wozza sparked my interest. Six bottles to go over the coming weeks to fill the doz before shipping.

Please excuse the serious lack of PC in my prose, but mof_s, or Vm's, I slightly get lost with some of the less than easy abbreviations. Iirc, I get most of em, but sometimes I get a but stumped.

I've recently been dabbling in Langton's auctions, but i've noticed some scepticism to them. Before i make any more purchases i'm keen to get some advice on these auctions - namely are they worth a punt or too risky seeing as they cant vouch for the storage of the wine?

Hi GroupHug if there is quality storage involved they will say so just click on the paperclip and read the notes could be screwcap, storeage; label damage or how far the wine is in the neck of the bottle. The only way you can get a guarantee is buying through their brokers. For auctions I have had only one bad one and it was speedily replaced by courier but generally they are ok.Cheers

I notice this morning at DM all Penfolds recent release gone up in price.... I guess the opening " specials" are over... they had 389 ( 6 bottles ) for $69.80 now $80.80

I've been buying from Langton's for years and I've not had an issue. Sure you'll occasionally get a corked, cooked or poor bottle of wine, but no more often than you would from brick and mortar/online stores.

I'd observe a few auctions before I bid too heavily as some bottles consistently go much cheaper on Langtons than RRP (eg. d'Arenberg); so what feels like a bargain may not be.

Thanks for the info Rug, its appreciated.

WM 20% off today - code "TWENTY"

Just on that - anyone noticed the general deterioriation in wine prices from winemarket? A lot of the 'secret label' reds today seem to be selling at full retail, almost as though prices have been raised to offest todays discount code. The Hares Chase Ironscraper Shiraz, for example, has sat there at full retail since it's been offered while folks have been picking it up from Langtons (the premium wine brand of the Woolworths conglomerate) for less than half that price per bottle! I can barely be bothered trawling the site each time a 20% offer comes up (which is roughly once a month or less, compared to maybe twice amonth before).

I understand people have lucked in on the occasional Penfolds slipup for a good bargain, but overall the value proposition WM provided in the past is rapidly diminishing. It used to be a place for clearing wine stocks for Woolworths, but they are almost competing with their other arms (e.g. Cellarmasters) nowadays. Just makes me wonder if the glut of well-priced quality wines are finally starting to get soaked up...

Hard to find much of value on either WM or CM in my opinion, even with the discount offers. Unfortunately with all the deals I seem to keep on trying, probably best for things which under normal circumstances aren't discounted much, if at all.

I spoke to Winemarket recently about the Ironscraper shiraz and was offered $25 but I passed. So if you are interested it's cheaper than the 20% off, just call them.

Never tried this, however it got 93 from Halliday, 87 from Mattinson, 89 from Tanzer and has 88 on CellarTracker. I suspect you got a decent, but unspectacular wine. Probably can't complain too much about a workmanlike wine at $12/bot. That said, reading the reviews, I hope you like cool climate Cabernet :)

Can't recall having had the straight Cab Sav from Glenlofty but their other wines via Vinomofo have been excellent value, I can't imagine you've been "sold a pup", crack one and let us know ;)

Thanks, I'll try one out & report back.

I picked up the '12 GL Cab from the FO - and promptly returned it.

I love their Shiraz and SV but the cab was not to my taste

Note to self: better keep the packaging, just in case...

As promised, I tried one out last night.
I put it in the decanter for 90 minutes before tasting. At first taste I was thinking it was a little less than workmanlike (more like apprentice), but over the course of another hour or so in the decanter it turned out to be quite acceptable. Nothing to rave about, just a decent everyday wine at an acceptable price. I'm just glad I didn't pay full whack for it - then I'm sure that I would have exercised the send it back option...

Buy hensche instead of penfolds as a good consistent drop but I think people's views on some Wynns wines are very favourable as well.
Consider that rubbish they put up as maxs whatever it is. a blend I believe, a blend of cough and high pricing. they should be ashamed of themselves.
