Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Email just received from Cracka Wines:

So just last week I excitedly emailed you about the new Virgin Hills Collection.

Spanning more than a decade of releases (dating back to 2003) from this cult Victorian winery, it is a stunning vertical of aged wines at a jaw-dropping price.

One wine out of the pack, however, really deserves more attention - the unreleased 2012 Virgin Hills Macedon Ranges Cabernet Blend.

Drawn from one of the best Macedon Ranges vintages of the last decade, this classic red has a timelessness to it that is just magnificent. A perfect cool climate Cabernet from one of the most marginal vineyards around.

If you've not heard the Virgin Hills story before, I'll let James and Huon fill you in:

'When asked, to which vineyard would you point a French wine expert if you wanted to impress him or her with the capacity of Australia to produce a consistently fine wine over a decade? My answer in all probability would be Virgin Hills.' James Halliday.

'Virgin Hills has long held a special place in the hearts of many wine lovers, especially the breed that like to seek out obscure and hard to get' Huon Hooke, Sydney Morning Herald

This new 2012 is an absolute classic release for Virgin Hills too. An effortlessly stylish, elegant, mid-weight Cabernet blend with fine cassis, dried herb and cedar characters, the tannins suggesting that it will be a twenty or thirty year wine.

What's more, as one of our best customers. I can offer you this special wine at the glorious pre-release price of just $31.50/bottle (in six packs) - 56% off the winery RRP.

$31.50 for a glorious cellar-worthy red from a famous estate? Incredible. Fill your boots right here or give my phone team a call on 1300 88 9463.

P.S. Have you seen our recent press? We're expanding into Asia. Check out our CEO Dean talking to Sky News here and more info in the Power Retail article here.

Hmmmm, I bought the last vertical case of 6 from Cracka. Wonder if I should partake in this offer...

Disgraceful eBay and GraysOnline:

Just received an email from them that teh product was sold out.

I have a similar situation with eBay and Winemarket, though they haven't had the courtesy to actually tell me yet via eBay, phoning Winemarket revealed the problem. I ordered on Monday and was checking my tracking yesterday via Nextday:
Consignment cancelled 08/08/2017, 09:38:45
Status: Job Cancelled

I called Winemarket today to find out what had happened and was told that they must have oversold, yet the wine is still being listed on eBay ("that's not us, that's eBay", apparently). eBay haven't alerted me to any issue, so unless I'd chased it up I'd be none the wiser.

Winemarket (to their credit) offered me something else to slightly greater value or a refund, but they don't have anything else I particularly want right now.

Surprising how often the etailers "over-sell". Happy to take your money, but can't design a stock control system that stops them from selling wine they don't have...

I had two orders recently with Just Wines, both of which I was notified after several days "were out of stock". After several long phone calls and a number of emails, they sent replacements. In one case, wine from a completely different vineyard, and in the other, a different vintage. All refunded in the end, but the pain of mucking around with their admin people and taking the wine back to the Post Office to return means I'm unlikely to buy from them again.

Mywineguy did that to me when I (almost) bagged some Brookland Valley Reserve Cabernet for $32pb via a promo of theirs.

I bought one of the previous offers and wouldn't do so again. The earlier vintages (1998 - 2003) I received weren't that drinkable and most went to waste.

I tried the 2012 over the last two nights. An interesting wine that defies my attempts at categorisation. I probably need to send a bottle to Delectable Blue or Wozza.

It's light - 13% ABV, but still has an intense nose, with lots of fleeting flavours. Palate is OK. Not too much happening on the finish other than fruit, but it's still young, so no great disappointment there.

Following up - credit to Winemarket for handling this well. The only thing from there I really wanted was ~20% more expensive than what I ordered, but they agreed to send that as a replacement.

For those poor souls who suffered at the shoddy hands of grays/winemarket or whoever would not fulfil their 2014 avatar orders - under $24 bottle delivered in a sixer. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/323396

Meanwhile, I just saw a $60 price tag slapped on it at a BWS!! Surely it wasn't even a $40 rrp wine before this rating??

You can also buy from Langtons at $29 ( buy now not auction ) the 2014

Cracka have called me a few time in the last week (been ages before that) spruiking stock from MyWineGuy they can access - or some such pitch.

Out of curiosity, can anyone tell me what the going "good" rate is for '10 Meshach and '13 Old cough? (Asking $79.99 and $169.99(?) IIRC)

These are fair prices. Not amazing though. I wouldn't buy at these prices.
