Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

True, not risky, just a pain. And after checking again today (I've been considering buying a bottle) it seems they've updated the listing to the 2011. Will be interested to see what you get.

Uh oh...that doesn't bode well. Will certainly report back once it arrives. If its the 2011 I'll be sending it straight back.

Cracka are one of these companies that don't always have stuff in stock. They advertise, and when they get an order, they'll then try to source stock from the winery. Which they may, or may not get.

Review-wise I'm in two minds - it's actually useful to have access to reviews of back vintages, because sometimes they come up via other sellers or auction sites.

MWG, whilst now owned by Cracka is run independently by Simon Green. Whilst there were teething issues early on, it seems to run pretty well now, in my experience.

My biggest issue with MYG is that the last few times they've called me to offer me deals "they can't publish", they've offered me wines that are on their website at the same price.

Simon does a good job, but all the back-end fulfilment is still via the "highly-automated" Cracka systems and the interfaces to the wineries for those wines not in stock is where a lot of the issues occur. And there seems to be little in the way of automated or manual "exception monitoring", making the situation worse.

Simon gives assurances on returns of "mis-represented" or faulty wines, but if you took the Returns policy literally you wouldn't deal with them at all. Returns Refund Policy / Quality Guarantee | Cracka Wines

I agree Pantsoff. I had some fairly aggressive sales pitches, basically he read out the JH score and comments then said should I put you down for a 12 pack? when I said that I didn't want that particular wine he asked why not more than once. The deals were also supposed to be super special, but were on the website... I returned 5 bottles out of a 6-pack of the Sharman's Pinot (not to my taste) on 2nd of November and they apparently only received it back on Friday!

That "can i put you down for a dozen?" sales patter rings a bell....

And it isn't just MWG. I had to call United 4 times over about a year, to get them to take me off their sales list. Points for enthusiasm and persistence but a great way to make sure you never buy from them again. Shame, as I liked their website and had bought a bit online.

The pressured tele-sales must work, but it get's me offside immediately.

Which part/s of their returns policy?

I've also had a few fulfilment issues with MWG/Cracka which Simon resolved - delays can be annoying, but for me and my lack of cellar space, just as quality trumps value, so does price over speed

thanks so much for the tip B-Man & you are entirely correct. I've just picked one up from The Dan's Prahran cellar, which is a pretty amazing store.

Yes it is - did you manage to sample from both ground-level and basement Enomatics?

Blocking their calls works for me.

Having issues with Cracka on two half dozens at the minute - Serafino Shiraz 15 and Teusner Joshua 16. To be honest I don't mind waiting 7-10 days but the lack of communication and inability to confirm if/when stock will arrive does get frustrating. That said this is the first time I've had an issue with them.

It wont be the last time unfortunately. I abandoned them sometime ago. They've never had anything I couldn't get at the same price or even cheaper elsewhere.

Any other retailers you d recommend Dr Ralph?

Cracka just cancelled my Teusner order - coincidentally it's the same wine GraysOnline cancelled during a 20% off sale earlier in the year.

My staple retailers are:

Dan Murphys
Winestar
Vinomofo
Cellarmasters

I'm sure that you will see negative reports from people about each of these and I'm not claiming any of them are perfect. But in my experience these retailers have presented me with the least problems.

If you're specifically looking for Teusner have you looked at:

Teusner Riebke Mataro 2015

Don't forget there is a spend $130 get $60 off offer for Cellarmasters via Secure Parking at the moment:

The Teusner Riebke Shiraz (alongside the Mataro mentioned by Dr Ralph) also pops up on cellarmasters every now and then (including during the coupon deals) so keep an eye out. Its readily available usually, but then comes and goes during the deal periods.
