Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Re: Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals - Eden Hall Shiraz Viogner

Thanks for the confirmation roshea. Have you had the opportunity to try one yet?

No, sorry - I'm recovering from ebola / mancold and the taste buds aren't fully functioning just yet. The 94 point Halliday rating gives me a lot of confidence.

Re: Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals - Eden Hall Shiraz Viogner

I got the cab merlot last week, it is the Layla. No problems with delivery, as for all of my previous DM orders.

Faced with a decision to go for the Victorian cabernet or the eden hall, I would personally go for the eden hall.
Furthermore, I would get the vintage that yank talks about.
On the 18th October I thought the 2007 CSV was a beautiful wine, not as sweet as barossans. I thought it still had 3-5years in it.
So based on that, a six pack you can't go wrong with IMHO. Really whichever vintage.
Yes, mine were $99 delivered, but the cheeky DM's jacked up the price. Capitalism at its best !

I could be wrong. The 2007 is there for the $99.
You may be thinking 91 JH points versus more for the older ones....I gave the body of the 2007 CSV about 7.5 which is good for the style.
Forgot I had another one on Friday 13th November with thai as I haven't written it up yet. Once again beautiful.
It followed a Nicholson river pinot which was quite nice as well but the eden was brilliant.
for 16.66 delivered, barrrgain.

But , if you could share 3 of each with someone even better....

If it's mostly the Halliday points that are attractive about it, this dozen might be a better deal for you: http://www.winemarket.com.au/Halliday-95-and-96-Point-Mixed-Red-Dozen . Especially since they're not offering free shipping on either (which they have done before on similar deals). But to be fair, the ones in that 6-pack are (with the exception of the Zonte's and the Heirloom) higher-end wines than those in the dozen. Try to scare up a 20% off (or at least free shipping) coupon on one of those coupons sites. Especially with 20% off, it seems not bad, to sample some of these.

And now for something completely different.
Imagine buying a cheapie from Danny M's, .........this is the segue to this article.

We all know what it’s like to open a bottle of cheap wine and immediately wish we’d spent a bit more money.

Instead of throwing the bottle in the bin or using it for cooking however, a new device promises to make a young wine taste like a classic vintage within minutes.

The Sonic Decanter uses ultrasonic waves to speed up the ageing process.

Within 20 minutes or less, the machine is claimed to soften tannins, develop flavour and release aromas that are usually only found in aged wines.

The device, which can be controlled via a smartphone app, can also be used to restore wines that have been open a few days to a drinkable state.

The contraption was invented by Michael Coyne and Charles Leonhardt in the US, who are attempting to raise money to launch the product via the crowdfunding website Kickstarter.
The team reached their $85,000 goal target with 895 backers pledging $139,412 to help bring the project to life.

The device has already won plaudits from wine experts. American wine store owner John Allen said: "I thought it was an impressive piece of work. It changes wine in ways that I hadn’t expected... Tthe treatment makes it more soft, more gentle, more drinkable.”
The Sonic Decanter costs around £150

So, if anyone upthread was thinking about those winemarket 6/12 packs of reds, code '20NOV' gets 20% off for today. Those cases again:

Makes them a tastier proposition!

I think the second pack - the 95/96 pack looks the most compelling to me - and don't forget, there is an additional PricePal cashback of 10% or 9% through CashRewards, if you prefer. That's up to another $15.92 saving, or just under $12 a bottle plus delivery, which is pretty impressive for some mid-week drinkers.

Crikey, I hate to fail anyone out there with a bad recommendation so you will find this chardonnay good. In my opinion, much, much better than good. Two other punters commented on it via Winemarket, and I also delved into the internet to get a feel for it
before I bought it. It felt damn good, and especially after the Brothers and sister cab that vinomofo put out. That was another beautiful wine.

So I have had one out of six and as I turn to my tasting book, guess what, I am going by memory. No notes except ummmmmmmmmmmmmm. Nil desperandum TDC, money back guarantee like the fo. I will pick them up from you the first week of January if you don't like them. More than that, Wozza will buy half of your remaining. Only joking, you will love it. And the reason you will love it is that these fox Gordon folks make wine with finesse. We are not talking about big clunky Oldsmobiles, we are talking about swarve citroens, or fiats if you get my drift. the chardy is not in your face, but has a nice complexity to it. I could go on, but I wished I had the notes. I am just not as efficient as Wozza with his supurb Vivino library.

In fact, such is Wozzas' visual descriptions that I am going to pull out one of our mutual VM buys, have his vivino review handy, and I am going to look for all those characteristics he mentions. Who hasn't done this reading the back of a nice bottle? If I find inconsistencies, or plagiarism, or tasting notes that were mentioned that I cannot find, I am going to a lawyer to sue this lawyer. Slater and Gordon. They will take my case pro bono. But they aint gonna take my case of the Empress. That's too nice ! Wozza tells it in a real way, so I am going to put him to the test soon. I don't want to find that wozza was on hallucinogens during the making of his vivino piece.

So hope to see you in Sydney in January with your bottle of Vintage Krug. Oh, that's my thankyou pressie !

Cheers

Thanks Beefarmer. Just don't go to Dr Ralph if you do need that lawyer - otherwise I am doomed (he's never lost a case). God help me ...!!

On a slightly more serious note, I write the reviews blind, that is - without being influenced by what others say. I often try to describe the experience of the wine probably more than the taste, because most regular wine drinkers are usually good at describing the taste. I do circle back to the bottle description, then other Vivino reviews and sometimes I go to the expert reviews to see if my taste matches theirs. It often doesn't match, or should I say it does match, but we have used different descriptors to describe the same tastes.

I almost always leave my descriptors as is, unless I feel I got it wrong or its a bit unfair. For instance, I did add an extra note to my Penfolds 169 2013 review when I described it as "too green" by adding "it was too green for me, but lovers of choc mint / spearmint finish will love this wine". I picked up the choc mint / spearmint description from the Penfolds website after the tasting. I could see why they described it that way, and I thought I better give this some respect given its price and reputation and probably because it was more accurate than and helpful than just describing it as 'too green'.

You can probably tell when I get all excited about a wine, because I will major more on the experience than the taste. Why? Well, how a wine makes you feel lasts longer than the 5-60 second taste sensation you get from drinking it. Price also helps drive that feeling experience too. There is nothing better than picking up a bargain, especially from the Big Gun Retailers (like the Pyrus from WineMarket), and feeling you have got an amazing wine at an amazing price.

Beefarmer, don't feel like you're under pressure or your reputation is at stake. I've outlaid just $72 for 6 bottles. It's also worth noting that I've coped with the Glenlofty 2011 Chardonnay (sometimes I think it tastes better than others) although I have withheld it from friends. I'm sure we'll be welcoming The Empress with open arms.

Re: Vinomofo Wine Deals

On recommendation I went for the Fox Gordon (sounds like Fox Hat as in "Wear the..."), the 12 bottle Halliday mix and what the hell I thought I'll get some Sieur D'Arques Aimery Grand Cuvee 1531 NV 6pack on spec. If it is no good they are always good for Chrisy presents. ;)
