Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Now, a belated big shout out for Different Drop in Sydney:

After confirming on a Friday that I could combine a price-match with 10% off my 1st order, then placing it on the weekend, it arrived in Melbourne on the Tuesday (free delivery for orders $150+) with a hand-written thank-you note :)

They currently have 10% off Ravensworth wines with voucher code RADICALRAVENSWORTH until tomorrow/Wednesday, including the 95pt Shiraz Viognier 2015 for $31.50 - a good alternative to Clonakilla's considering that Ravensworth's owner/winemaker is also assistant winemaker there :)

Also, Langton's has a 95-98pt Deluxe Mixed Six Pack for $270 with free delivery ($45/bt):

  • Grant Burge Meshach 2004
  • Two Hands Ares Shiraz 2009
  • Majella Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
  • Howard Park Leston Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
  • Turkey Flat Barossa Valley Shiraz 2013
  • Voyager Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2011

AC gave the Odyssey 2001 a 93 on Cellar Tracker. It is starting to tempt me this set of 7 but I am intrigued as to what the 97'er is?

The image is inconsistent with the description and probably wrong: it shows 1x97pt, 2x96pt, whereas the description mentions 3x96pt - by deduction it seems to be "McLaren Vale GSM 2011 — 96 points Campbell Mattinson"

Be warned:

"Please note - in case of popular demand, some products may be substituted with similar wines of equal value."

Has happened to me previously.
Happy to say all arrived as described today. Looking forward to trying the penley reserve and forest hill

For those thinking of taking part in the 30% off deal at WineDirect, might want to hurry. They've already sold out of some popular items, and the deal gets released to the general public tomorrow. See post further up for full details and links.

What has been sold out already if you don't mind my asking?

It's actually hard to tell because all trace of them disappears from the site. I ordered a mixed case of 12 singles and of those, three are now gone:

Houghton Crofters Shiraz
Purple Hands Wines Mataro Grenache Shiraz
Paxton Quandong Farm Single Vineyard Shiraz

A shame about the Purple Hands in particular. I was hoping to order more before the offer ended if I liked it. Still, you win some, you lose some.

Thanks, I haven't tried the MGS from purple hands but I scooped up as much Purple Hands Planta Circa Cabernet as I could. Stellar stuff

I was tossing and turning but eventually passed on it. The comparison was with the Burge Meshach deal, with a much younger red. As it is, went for the VM Star lane sangioveses in lieu of both.

I went with the Meshach one - should arrive in the next few days. Am interested to see what else was there.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the Star Lane Sangiovese when you get (via the correct thread of course :))

This was a boom for me, it should arrive late this week.
Curiously, Star Lane is yet another winery with a guy called Brett involved in the winemaking process. I've never seen such widespread cases of bizarre nominative determinism as that in the Aus wine industry. If you don't believe me just put the search string below into google.

brett winemaker -brettanomyces site:au

(the -brettanomyces filters out any references to that, leaving just the name)

It would be easy to remember names at the winemakers convention!

I bought a few botts of the Sons of Eden range a year or so ago on wine shop recommendation. How do you rate these guys Doc ?

Sons of Eden feature at this place:

https://www.artisansofbarossa.com/

Which I visited about 2 years ago. It was a very nice surprise. At the same tastings I discovered the Spinifex range.

Rate both fairly highly - depending on the price.

Whilst $29 to $17.10 isn't the best discounted wine you might see - especially if you compare it with the often 50% or more discount featured on Vinomofo - I think it worth $20. And I'm certainly in for a 6 pack.

What about that King Valley winery run by that European gentleman whose name was coughnio.

He changed his name by deed poll.

The Spinifex Indigene is a cracking wine, especially with some bottle age (~5-7 years).

Thanks Daver6. I've got a number of cases over a couple of different vintages of this wine. Yet to taste any of them yet though.

I discovered the Artisans of Barosssa last year and would highly recommend a visit. Massena (their Mataro is one of the best wines I've had in the last few years) and John Duval are two other wineries based there. Teusner was also there when we went, but no longer appears to be (based on the website).

$17.10 looks good, so I'm also grabbing 6.

A special from my very favourite winery, Gralyn in Margaret River:

All Wines
2001 Shiraz Cabernet, ranked 3rd by Winestate in their 2015 worlds greatest shiraz challenge ahead of Grange and Hill of Grace.
Currently slightly less than half price at $1470 for six.

They have some other 6-pack specials on at the moment too to celebrate the birthday of one of their proprietors, Merilyn.

It's still too expensive for me, but the 18 year old girl in me oh-so loves their Late Harvest Chardonnay ice cold on a blistering summer afternoon.

A lot of items have gone up rather steeply there of late - I picked up this (current) $130 pack for $79 Buy Wine Online & Cheap Wine Deals Australia - WineMarket. It was even for sale at up to $140 a month or so back! The Maverick Trial Hill shiraz was selling for $169 a sixer on Christmas eve, and a couple of months later the same case was selling for $239. I've been wondering if there is some sort of surge pricing at work for when deals run hot.

Just to follow up on my own post - the winemarket pack I linked to above a week ago is now selling at its original price ($79) of a few months ago! The Maverick Grenache that was selling for $33 a bottle, that went down to $31.50 last week, is now up to $50!

However the Halliday 6 pack with the 2008 Parker first Growth would be a steal if there was a 20% code floating around...
