I don't buy Clonakilla SV either, but it is very well made in a certain style that has appeal to many, but not for me, especially at the RRP or even discount price. Classing it as "ordinary" because you don't like it is a bit of a stretch though. There are numerous well made wines that I can appreciate as being quality wines in their target style but choose not to drink because the are not a style I prefer (especially if they are white/orange).

Same. I don't understand why it can be classified as exceptional in Langtons. But in the winery, I tasted their estate Viognier(around $50), it is super good, exceptional, and very impressive. Round, integrated. It is definitely a must buy(suggest buying from winery).

Their Viognier was excellent for me too. Also highly recommend their Riesling

I'll go and pick up the Clonakilla SV (and Ata Rangi) that no one wants though ! Both are actually all gone!

I think the SV is a fantastic wine, intensely perfumed, good fruit weight and really complex without being a heavy set wine. I also think it is a bona fide Aussie Icon wine unlike a lot of others.

Whether it's actually worth $120 is probably more debateable given nearby SV offerings or other cult SV, but it's definitely a very strong and solid wine for mine.

I guess it has become an iconic wine here and Langton’s classified to boot but the Northern Rhone originated the style. For this price that the Clonakila is now going at you can get better imported Rhone versions that can be had here for less than $100. This wine is another example of top tier Aussie wines being overpriced in this market. Fair play to the producers - it’s good marketing and they are probably also targeting premium Asian markets with these price hikes - but in Australia I feel we’re actually better off looking to French, Italian and Spanish imports for value when it comes to mid top/ top shelf styles these days. You can get premier cru red burgundy for less than the price of a large top shelf section of Aussie Pinot. You can get growth Bordeaux for the price of many premium Aussie Cabernets etc. Its very strange really.

Last year I picked up a handful of 1er cru burgundies for between $65 - $100 including chanson Marconets from TWC & faivelley clos de myglands, IMHO These wines are in a diffrent laegue to Tolpuddle and your top shelf Stoniers etc. I know we can sometmes get these local wines at better prices but the 1er burgundies are wines for the ages. These aussie imitations are bunch pressed fruit bombs in comparison. Just my opinion mind

Chanson Marconnets was pretty good, but I don't think it knocked my socks off either. Oddly with our limited experience, I thought the Chanson was closer in style to something from NZ than from AU.

Probably in a different league to Tolpuddle and Stonier as I don't think they are great comparisons? Hoddles 1er - $50/60? Chatto Isle $100? Farr $80? Bindi $70-120? Admittedly they aren't going to replace or give you those old world/vine notes, but I think they make compelling wines.

With Cullen DM approaching $150 there are some older examples available at Dans (if you trust their cellaring).

Conversely, I whenever I have taken a punt on cheap non-classified BDX I am often really impressed. The 'Cotes' in particular do some reaĺly good wines. Not better or worse than domestic but different.

My pick would be the La Lagune which is a Third Growth and an absolute bargain but also the Langoa Barton has been getting rave reviews in recent vinatges. 19 and 20 were both very good bordeaux vintages

I had a quick look today and saw I have only bought twice from Dan Murphy since 1 December 2021. Total cost of the orders was around $510 for 30 bottles of wine, one at $260 for 24 bottles of the Undercover Shiraz and Sparkling Shiraz deals back in December 2021 mostly for others, and a mixed 6-pack of imports at $250 in February for tasting group purposes.

For the same period the prior year, pre-Endeavour separation, when I still had free freight, I had 14 orders, can't be bothered adding up the costs.

I always thought that they were not making much money from my orders, looks like they worked that out too and fixed it.

Me too! In fact I've had only one since December (some hugely discounted Harry's Monster), and four all up since Nov 2020. I shudder to think how much business I've put through VM and Langtons (and even places like Winestar, cellarone, BWS and boozebud) since then. Dan's just hasn't been doing it for me.
