Re: David Jones American Express - New Offer - 40,000 MR (20,000 SPG) - Annual Fee $9

Thanks for the link. I applied today. I intend to cancel my other Amex Card for this as it seems to favour my current spending patterns. Am I correct in thinking that the sign up bonus offer on this card is not excluded by owning a previous AMEX card?

Hopefully approved quickly and I can add a new referral.

As I read it, this is the only clause you should be worried about:

'Customers applying for the David Jones American Express Staff Card or the David Jones American Express Platinum Staff Card or Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other David Jones Credit Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.'

Re: David Jones American Express - New Offer - 40,000 MR (20,000 SPG) - Annual Fee $9

Just applied.

Some points headed your way fairbasa and paying it forward since you used the link from locopano. Enjoy.

Hope to add my own link in due course once approved (well assuming that I'm approved :) )

Fairbasa, just wondering if you got those referral points?

I hadn't heard anything so called AMEX today and gave the reference number provided to me at the end of the application. They said they had no record of my application and wouldn't acknowledge the reference number as being valid. Asked me to re-apply. I told them it wasn't happening and gave them the reference number again and said you sent it to me so you need to make it work for you. They then said there had been some technical problems assessing a lot of applications and that the information was temporarily unavailable. Told me to call back in 2 days time. All seems very odd.

I was about to ask you about your application today! I thought you must have accidentally clicked the wrong link :P

No, haven't received points from your application nor a family members application put through about 2 days after yours. I found it strange given they usually post within about 2 days. I will give AMEX a call to find out about the referral points and another family member's application status.

I'll make sure I follow up with them about this when I next hear from 'Mary'.

Seems AMEX have some serious problems at the moment.

Spoke to Lucy (?) in the New Applications team. She indirectly acknowledged there has been issues of late and just told me to re-apply as they had no record of my application. I said I was concerned the family member in question would get a double-hit on their Veda file - she seemed to think it would be easily removed as a duplicate. Possibly but it's a hassle! Nothing has appeared on Veda yet for the first application, so hopefully it won't.

I assume that you gave them the application/receipt number and the date of the application. If so they can't be saying that there is no record of it - they gave you the receipt number!

It's more than a hassle. It's unlikely to occur in my experience.

Said family member didn't write down the reference number unfortunately :-|

They have now applied again. We will wait and see! Not feeling confident.

Re: David Jones American Express - New Offer - 40,000 MR (20,000 SPG) - Annual Fee $9

So it would seem that I wasn't the only one. After not hearing / seeing any response to my application I decided to give them a call. They couldn't find my application despite linking it to my current AMEX card. After the 3 transfers and possibly the worst AMEX customer service I have ever received I was told that I should reapply. Did this begrudgingly and was told to call them after 24hrs to fast track the application.

Now it would seem that I have misplaced the 2nd reference number, I can see how this will end !

Re: David Jones American Express - New Offer - 40,000 MR (20,000 SPG) - Annual Fee $9

So I rang again today - No change.

They can't find either of the applications and said not to apply again until they get the results from their investigation into the issue. They assured me their system will recognise two applications for the same product and only do one credit enquiry, but I don't have much faith in their system at this stage.

They apologised profusely but it's not really good enough - amateur hour all round.

Thanks for the update.

I called again as well today. Basically the same response that you have received. I upped the ante by saying I wanted another 20,000 points for the inconvenience. They said that they'd consider it.

Re: David Jones American Express - New Offer - 40,000 MR (20,000 SPG) - Annual Fee $9

Is there still a two credit card limit with American Express? I have an Explorer and a Qantas Discovery already and wondering whether I need to close one of those before I apply for one of these DJ cards.

My understanding is that this is permissible (as long as you have not recently held a David Jones AMEX card). However, I'd hold off making your application until their online problems (as discussed above by at least 3 members recently) are resolved.

I have a corporate AMEX and personal AMEX and didn't have any problems applying if that helps? It seems as though the DJ AMEX program is quite separate to regular AMEX cards...similar to if were bank issued.

Thank you both, that does help, and thanks for the reminder about the current technical issues. Last thing I want to do is get caught up in that!

The normal rules for personal AMEX cards is an individual can not hold more than two credit cards and one Charge card. Having said that I've seen multiple people here on AFF that have two AMEX credit cards a AMEX charge card and a DJ's AMEX. Like others have said I think the DJ's program is quite separate and the "normal" rules don't necessarily apply.

Dr Ralph, I'm guessing your application has been processed because 20k MR points showed up?

It could be a family member's, but their credit score hasn't changed so I'm thinking unlikely.

I'm not aware of any further developments. They were supposed to call me if anything happened.

Re: David Jones American Express - New Offer - 40,000 MR (20,000 SPG) - Annual Fee $9

Looks like it was the family member's. Received an SMS from AMEX Monday that the application was approved. That was after a follow-up call to them and assurance they would escalate it with a supervisor last week.

Credit hit on April 21 for AMEX. Can only have been for this David Jones card.

Given I applied on April 4 and still don't have a card, this is very poor stuff from AMEX.

Update: Card received today.

Looks like AMEX have fixed their online application problems so time to get on board.

40,000 AMEX Member Rewards points on offer for a $99 annual fee (you only get 30,000 points if you don't use a referral link).

As long as you have not held a David Jones AMEX card within the last 18 months you can apply (so no 18 month exclusion period applies for other AMEX cards. IE. It matters not if you have recently cancelled another AMEX card or still hold that AMEX card – you'll still get the bonus points).

Very easy to trigger the bonus points – just spend 3 times at places other than David Jones.

My referral link:

http://amex.com.au/refer/davidnmYu2

I will receive 20,000 points should you be kind enough to use my referral link.
