Daylight Saving Discussion

and Lord Howe who are snobbish enough for their own time and is currently on LHDT]

Stuffed me up when i went there recently. Told everyone to meet at 5, only 1 showed up. The others didn't realise that there was a timezone change.

Is anyone a morning person?

When I was in Sydney with daylight savings I can do a full day's work in Sydney and then head out and play 18 holes of golf. Or just practice if that is all I wanted to do.

The other way round is impossible as the last thing I want to do after a game of golf is 7.5 hours of work in the office.

But it wasn't just golf. Mow the lawns. Water the garden. Barbeques in the park. Kicking a ball around with work colleagues. Etc....

Exactly. We can actually have more than an hour of cricket training now.

Love these people who think they get an extra hour of daylight, but make snide comments about curtains fading.

Start an hour earlier, is another option. The position of two bits of metal against a few numbers is nothing more than an artificial construct.

We get an extra hour of sunlight at the right time of the day.

No, you do not get an extra anything. If you really want to use that sunlight there is nothing stopping you from getting up an hour earlier. There is nothing stopping you from living according to the sun. A clock is an abstract construct that feeds human's desire to control nature. daylight savings is just nature control on steroi_s.

That theory holds fine unless your working hours are not determined by you.
The kinds of activities that most people treasure that extra hour of sunlight at the end of the day for are not things that are suitable for most of us before work. I also wouldn't want to have a relaxing round of golf spoilt by the thought of an upcoming day at work, or get covered in soil, sweat and weeds in the garden, then have to clean up for work.
For me it's the novelty of not having to trip over in the dark coming in the door that I will love.
Later will come the gardening time.

Yes I know. I can start 3 hours earlier and finish at 2:00pm instead. But that means I would need to go to sleep earlier.

Also if you want to do things with family or friends starting earlier doesn't help.

Nothing wrong with daylight saving. It's just a couple of bits of metal as you mention.

And it's just as simple to get up a hour earlier to milk the cows.

We unequivocally experienced an hours extra daylight here in MEL yesterday - and how good was it? Saturday sunset was 18:27 - Sunday sunset was 19:27 - what's so confusing with this? How could anybody in their right mind argue we did not receive an extra hour of daylight?

Those awake at 5:30am?

I don't object to daylight saving in principle, but I do wish it were better advertised. In my mind it still happens at the end of October, so I was caught out yesterday and arrived an hour late for a commitment. I don't have television but I do listen to news on the radio at least once a day, and nothing had alerted me this year.

Wouldn't have mattered either way - 5:30am Sat or Sun still dark:
...
I'll rephrase:

"Those awake from¹ 5:30am?"

¹ and will stay awake for at least one hour after whatever time it takes to get that hour after sunrise/pre-dawn twilight ...
