Good to see they are still using AEST which is 5pm - 7pm for most people :!:

This QLDer's thoroughly tongue-in-cheek response (straitman, I know you know this, so not aimed at you...), taken from our omniscient government's website (Time - australia.gov.au)

AEST = Australian Eastern Standard Time, equal to Coordinated Universal Time plus 10 hours (UTC +10).
AEDT = Australian Eastern Daylight Time, UTC + 11.

Yes, the majority move to AEDT during summer; yes, QLD probably should drag itself out of the Sir Joh years and follow suit. But until we do...

"The whole world takes its time from Greenwich, but Greenwich, they say, takes its time from Admiral Boom. Watcher, Admiral!"

Slightly off topic, but were there not two trials of daylight saving in Queensland conducted (at least partly) under Sir Joh's watch? In 1971 and then again from 1989 to 1992, after which it was defeated by referendum?

that's true - but there's an argument that Joh did such a good job of convincing us that it'd upset the cows that his influence lasted well into the 90s (opposition to daylight saving is of course traditionally a rural - and conservative - concern in QLD).

anyway, it would be worth reassessing public opinion almost 20 years later, don't you think?

and yes, thoroughly OT ;)

Re: Virgin Happy Hour Sale Changes

I won't bother to ask if you don't like it as it fades your curtains too much :!:

Nope, it's because the sun shines out of my #*%# and I'm not getting up an hour earlier for anyone!

No actually the vote against was from north Queensland and western Queensland, the places that don't need more sun. I know I was in cairns for one of trial years and it was disgusting. The vote for daylight savings was mostly in the south east, the area that would benefit for daylight savings. No massive surprise in that result.

As straitman said "To each their own".

I have been in Brisbane for over 3 years now and the hardest thing to get used to is the sun rising early and setting early. In summer it rises even earlier and sets slightly later.

I hate it when it is light outside at just after 4:00am and I do not start work until ~10:00am. And when I finish work at ~6:00pm-7:00pm it is dark.

Daylight saving makes sense to the majority of the civilised world....

Or you could start work at 8 or 9 am. Daylight saving in reverse.

Gotta say I don't recall the sun setting that early, might have to visit again to refresh my memory

Conversely, I love it when it is light outside at just after 4:00am. You know, one can actually get up earlier than smoko time and enjoy those early morning cool hours rather than try to sweat it through an extended period of late afternoon heat pretending it's a great idea! Why is it such an obsticle for southerners to understand there are differences and the whole freaking world doesn't have to be just like them to be civilised.

The majority who want DS are blow-ins from southern states. Drop into Qld for a lifestyle change....then whinge when it's different. I always thought that's why they want a lifestyle change  (The south east corner is chockers full of expat mexicans, so it's no wonder the vote here is swayed).

If you want the "civilised world" you've always got the option to return to whence you've come........alternatively, remove the blinkers and you might just find a whole better way of life!!

Yep, I used to enjoy an early morning surf in the daylight and I'm sure there are many on the coasts who still do.

Re: Virgin Happy Hour Sale Changes

Still thoroughly OT, I see :D

Yep, rural (as opposed to urban) QLD - at least everywhere except the Great Barrier Reef tourism strip

the places that don't need more sun

I love this - as if the sun would decide to shine longer because a bunch of ants did or didn't change the time

Well, this 3rd generation QLDer would much rather have an extra hour of sun after finishing work - and then there are the early morning phone calls from mexican colleagues who "forget" you're probably still at home (and hopefully in bed). maybe it comes down to morning vs non-morning people?

Anyway, this thread is a perfect example of why we should start discussing it again as a state...

Re: Virgin Happy Hour Sale Changes

I'm now a resident of Sydney and I'm a big fan of daylight saving. When living in Brisbane, I would also have supported it. But when living in FNQ prior to that, I can't imagine anything more useless - summer/winter sunset differential in that part of the world is minimal, twilight is extremely short, so all you're really achieving is leaving work an hour earlier when it's still hot outside.

The US seems to manage quite well with time zone boundaries that don't follow state borders. I don't see why SEQ should be any different.

And good on DJ for using AEST time on its 'happy hour' sale and not bowing to the corrupted timekeeping morals of those outside QLD!

Umm the great barrier reef tourism strip has a number of cities that are pretty industrial and urban.

Well clearly I meant that there is already heaps of daylight in the tropics so no need to "save" it. But to appease you: "don't need more sun in the afternoon". sorry for not completing my sentence properly.

I'm a big fan of daylight saving for Adelaide and Melbourne. But not for anywhere north of about Harvey Bay.

But much of the world and particularly the US and Europe is with us although obviously it depends a lot on the lattitude of where you live.

Are they with you? Germany doesn't do summer time. They move their clocks in winter. ;)

It's not an "us and them" as I see it. It is simply if a majority want it. The majority in Qld don't want it...proven twice now...and although I certainly concede there are some born and bred Qlders who may want it, the SE corner is pretty much the only support base for it and I firmly believe that is purely because of the expat southern population here.

You don't see many Qlders demanding from the rooftops that the southern states not have DS, so why the hell are the southern states usually so vocal about demanding that Qlders should change to suit them??????? If I wished to live in Melbourne I'd do so (and have in the past), but I choose Qld and I like Qld without the DS, BS!

The majority of the population have it. It causes disruptions to business by some states not adopting it and some adopting it. You have six months of the year when businesses are out of synch reducing the opportunity operate effectively.

It effectively "adds" an hour to travel time when travelling from QLD to the southern states. I know you gain an hour at the start of the journey up to QLD but that doesnt change the fact that when you fly home on a Friday - if you leave BNE at 5PM you get home at 9PM...

lol at more sun in the afternoon ...

I don't understand how DS is ok for southern centres as you mention by not for anything north of harvey bay ... the further you go south the longer the days due to how the sun shines on the earth ...

stupid FNQ people get affected by the heat and humidity and think there day is longer because of DS ...
