The majority in Qld don't want it...

That's not quite true, the majority of Qld people want it. I believe last time they held a vote it was 2/3 wanted it vs 1/3 who didn't.
So why was the wishes of the people ignored? Well they claimed that the 1/3 who didn't want it where almost all outside BNE, whilst the 2/3's who wanted it where almost all in BNE...

They decided that they needed to "rule for the state not just Brisbane", in otherwords ignore the majority to please a minority. There was some suggestions about making the timezone change line go mid way across the state but Qlder's didn't like the idea that the state would have 2 different time zones (ignoring the fact that NSW already has two different timezones)

It effectively "adds" an hour to travel time when travelling from QLD to the southern states. I know you gain an hour at the start of the journey up to QLD but that doesnt change the fact that when you fly home on a Friday - if you leave BNE at 5PM you get home at 9PM...

It's even worse flying to CBR from BNE for a morning meeting. Getting up at 3am to catch the 5:30 flight is NOT fun.

Exactly. Have a referendum then ignore the results. QLD politics is something I'm still trying to get my head around after living here for 10 years.

Wrong, the last time they had a vote in the early 1990s it was 54.5% No. Time in Australia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

lol at more sun in the afternoon ...

I don't understand how DS is ok for southern centres as you mention by not for anything north of harvey bay ... the further you go south the longer the days due to how the sun shines on the earth ...

stupid FNQ people get affected by the heat and humidity and think there day is longer because of DS ...

[-]Also wrong.[/-] or maybe not. (still I'm not saying the day is longer because of daylight saving, see below) The length of the day up north is relatively unvaried between winter and summer, well it changes the least and is around about 12 hours all year. Whereas the further south you go the variation in the length of the day becomes greater between seasons, with a maximum variation at the pole of 0 to 24 hours. The longest day of the year at the solstice is ~12 hours everywhere. Read more about how it works here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_length

So the tropics do in fact have more sunlight all year around. Unlike down south there is no benefit from moving an hour of daylight from the morning to the afternoon. Whereas that is a benefit for Melbourne and Adelaide and places such as that. So in Adelaide the extra hour lets one leave work and hit a small white ball around a paddock before it gets dark. In the tropics you can do that (or equivalent lifestyle suitable activity) without moving the hour of daylight.

And I don't know why you are lol'ing at more sun in the afternoon. You do realise that daylight savings moves an hour of daylight from the morning to the afternoon. I didn't think that I'd have to spell it out in simple terms. But since the implication seems to be lost here is another attempt: "more in sun in the afternoon and an equal amount of sun less in the morning." Happy?

The majority of the population have it.

The majority of the population probably have herpes too, but it doesn't necessarily follow that we all should share it.......irrelevant, pointless argument! :-|

It causes disruptions to business by some states not adopting it and some adopting it. You have six months of the year when businesses are out of synch reducing the opportunity operate effectively.

If you genuinely believe that, than may I suggest you lobby your political masters to not go stuffing around with time zones. Qld is not the state causing this alleged anomaly but to be honest I disagree with your presumption. Any businessperson who cannot add or subtract one, really has the wrong job and I'd sack any of my (past) employees who tried that on! If there are some pre-school dropouts that do actually have some kind of value to a business, shout them an iPhone.......it gives as many different time zones as one so desires and even colour codes night and day to make it even more simplistic! What amazes me even more with this very odd comment, is that it comes from a frequent flyer. Have you never flown through time zones (many, even in just one flight) and dealt with it?

So the curtains fading because of the hour extra sunshine is ludicrous..........but this is real? Anyone who interacts between any time zone changes knows full well there are pros and there are cons..........exploit the pros and deal with the cons, get over it!

I see Medhead has responded to this already but it typifies the Chinese rumours that are used by the pro-DS-BS lobby. The majority of Qlders rejected DS. The majority of the SE corner wanted DS (60/40 for, of which a fair number are ex-pat Mexicans who should not be allowed to speak let alone vote) and have ever since demanded to be pandered to. Of course the Gov't position was they have to govern for ALL Qlders........isn't that democracy? Holy political pontification Batman!

Exactly. Have a referendum then ignore the results.

Almost as bad as "run with a Chinese whisper and ignore the facts" ;)

QLD politics is something I'm still trying to get my head around after living here for 10 years.

Uhmmmm, only 10 years eh! Bring back Sir Joh and he'll learn you a few things

Actually, Adelaide effectively has a permanent 1/2 hour of daylight savings - the meridian that CST is taken from passes through Victoria (not SA).

Another from south east QLD who doesn't want daylight saving.Too damned hot in the afternoon for outside exercise. The morning is by far the best time for exercise.
Loved it when I lived in the Hunter.Love it when working in Tassie. But in QLD-just not needed.

I'm in the Hunter and I hate daylight saving ;)
Can't get the kids to go to bed when it starts. I much prefer it to be darker earlier in the evening. Think I must have been a Queenslander in a former life.

Another thing I like about DS in Adelaide is the confusion it causes for mum in Brisbane as we move from 1/2 an hour behind to 1/2 and hour in front.

We agree!!!! that's too bizarre I need to go to sleep and hope the natural world order has been restored in the morning.

Really? You condescend on my arguments below and start with "the majority of the population have herpes"???? Ignoring that the majority of the Australian populace live and deal with DST how about the majority of our trading partners who seem to do ok?

Not sure if you are aware but countries outside of Oz have different time zones and many of them have DST in various formats. So not really relevant to lobby my political masters.

I was going to argue more points but can't be bothered - QLD is right, DST is wrong, the rest of the world is wrong, it doesn't matter what the impact QLD's decision has as QLD is right and THEY HAD A REFERENDUM 20 YEARS AGO GODDAMNIT!

At this point it is best to invoke Godwin's law.

Here's an idea I've had for some time, that would solve several problems.

Why don't we just change the East Coast time to GMT+10.5 hours permanently. Half way between AEST and ADST. Leave it there all year around.

Means the following:
- Never have to adjust to different time when DST starts or finishes
- Never have to adjust to different time when traveling between the eastern states
- Airlines don't have to change domestic schedules twice a year (frequently stuffing things up in the process)
- Phone networks don't have to screw with our iPhones every year at the changeover
- Everyone in Qld who actually wants DST gets a reasonable compromise and at least a little bit of light at the end of the day and can sleep in for an extra half hour, which is really the same time anyway if the light wakes them up
- Everyone in Qld who doesn't want it only will ever have to adjust once and can then stop complaining and get on with it, and it's a reasonable compromise that won't put them out too much. Plus if the cows are confused at least they will only have to change their watch once.
- Everyone else who doesn't give a cough can get on with their lives and not have to listen to the same debate in Oct/Nov every bloody year!

Or you could start work at 8 or 9 am. Daylight saving in reverse.
Why would I start work at 8:00am or 9:00am? That means I would have to go to sleep at ~10:00pm to be up at 6:00am. No thanks.

If you want the "civilised world" you've always got the option to return to whence you've come........alternatively, remove the blinkers and you might just find a whole better way of life!!
Better way of life? You are joking right?

Let's get something straight. There is only one reason I am living and working in this dump....

Well I'm off to take my medication. That may help!

And exactly which place are you referring to as "a dump" ???

And what is the one reason you are living and working in it?

QLD is right, DST is wrong, the rest of the world is wrong,

This is more DS, BS drivel. When has Qlds decision not to want DS ever meant that DS is wrong for others? It hasn't. It's also interesting to note for those who seem so perturbed by the time zone "problem" that Australia lives with at least six different times zones all year round and we seem to manage OK. As for the naz_ comment, I'll treat that with the contempt it deserves as a comparison between genuine atrocities and suffering with something as trivial as this, is very poor form indeed.

Why don't we just change the East Coast time to GMT+10.5 hours permanently. Half way between AEST and ADST. Leave it there all year around.

That may work too. WST zone starts at the WA border so Perth and the west coast residents effectively live all year round with this concept already.

Better way of life? You are joking right?

Nope! But I'm not so narrow as to understand others will want to choose different lifestyles. On your own admission, you're a short term blow-in, blow-out, just one step up from the FIFO mine workers. You can whinge but at the end of the day, you have chosen to be here. Your reason for living in Qld has no relevance to me or this discussion and you do have the option of returning to wonderland and leaving the "dump" as a distant memory! Your choice, but please don't foister your preconceived ideals onto us.

What an interesting discussion. As a 44 year resident of the Sunshine State, I remember the Joh-era well (I was a Young Nat) and remember voting in the Referendum. As it's majority rules I can accept the decision of the people and live with it.

With my business hat on, I have to agree with awilcockson - but if one chooses to fly early then one has to accept the early start as the trade off for getting back early. Day trips to SYD and CBR are still possible, but MEL is really hard and makes for a long day. My choice is always to fly the night before to my destination and trade off the accom cost for the ability to be better rested and alert for meetings.

I doubt there will be a referendum on this again, anytime soon. Bring on Summer!

How old are you? I figured you were about my age. I also subscribe to the theory that the older we get the less sleep we need. I can live on about 6 to 8 hours sleep max. 4 or 5 on Sunday night. I can also be up and left in about an hour. I can only explain away my suggestion by saying that I foolishly applied my standards to everyone.

Oh but still if you wanted to deal with your daylight issue at the end if the day, then you would start work at 8 or 9 am :p ;)

Better way of life? You are joking right?

well there is only one reason I fly to Sydney every week. That's because anywhere has a better way of life than the harbour city. Particularly god's country north of the border. I mean you could get in a quick 9 holes between 4 am and when you need to be at work at 10am. :p

More seriously, based on some discussion when you first started up there, I do feel your hanging out in the wrong places. (entirely your choice, I'm not saying you should change) eg the mill ;)

Did anyone say the rest of the world was wrong :?: That's a massive leap in the wrong direction

At this point it is best to invoke Godwin's law.

naz_s.

An inherent part of Godwin's law is that you have now lost the argument. Ergo: Queensland should not have daylight savings. The nays have it. :p (quick close the thread now)

Now I remember why I (usually) stay out of threads debating religion or daylight savings.

It's like arguing with your mother in law, it starts off amusing but is ultimately pointless. Not an iota of care or consideration will be given by either side to the others side's view or opinion.

It's all completely pointless whilst cap'n Bligh is in power anyway ...

My last reply, considering I was mentioned by name. Flying the night before would be a nice option, good luck getting my company to pay for the extra expense (accommodation etc)
