Discussion on Ukraine situation 2022

Now appears Azovstal has been fully captured/evacuated/surrendered.

Russian forces now trying to encircle Ukrainian forces at Severodonetsk in Luhansk Oblast (Donbas).

I prefer a hole in the back of the head to being under Russian rule. I love my freedom.
Gas as a weapon - Grain as a weapon - Migrants as a weapon - Russia is at war with everyone
and either we win or we keep pretending this is totally normal

Day 94 (28/5 PM) situation summary from Institute for the Study of War

The Russian invasion of Ukraine that aimed to seize and occupy the entire country has become a desperate and bloody offensive to capture a single city in the east while defending important but limited gains in the south and east. Ukraine has twice forced Putin to define down his military objectives. Ukraine defeated Russia in the Battle of Kyiv, forcing Putin to reduce his subsequent military objectives to seizing Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine stopped him from achieving that aim as well, forcing him to focus on completing the seizure of Luhansk Oblast alone. Putin is now hurling men and munitions at the last remaining major population center in that oblast, Severodonetsk, as if taking it would win the war for the Kremlin. He is wrong. When the Battle of Severodonetsk ends, regardless of which side holds the city, the Russian offensive at the operational and strategic levels will likely have culminated, giving Ukraine the chance to restart its operational-level counteroffensives to push Russian forces back.

The free world should be doing more.. whatever it takes to cage the bear...

quote
In some nations it still hurts from Russia ... Among the ammunition that arrived in Ukraine from the Czech Republic was a rocket with the inscription "For the shot Prague Spring of 1968". The Dutch write "Revenge on MH17" on the shells. Poles sign ammunition "For Katyn!" and "For Kaczynski"

They will probably do a Grozny, and bomb the absolute cough out of the place. Civilian casualties, just collateral damage.

Have a read of this relating to Grozny, Russia Warns Civilians in Chechnya

Similar playbook to me, but it would seem that the Ukrainians are capable of putting up stronger resistance, hope so.

Slava Ukraini

And in another consequence of the war the Russians are reopening McDonalds restaurant under a new name with no reference to mcDonalds.

More than possible no, possible yes, but I'm with all the commentators on this. Russia is struggling to take on Ukraine and they think they have a chance against the combined force of NATO?. Sure, I get that in Russia they are acting in an echo chamber and aren't getting all the info about the real state of the war but but this would be a sure way to end Russia's power for a very long time, so while possible (and acknowledging all the internal craziness) I think this is more for internal patriotic consumption than a real threat.

Acknowledging the very real threats of nuclear weapons, it would be a sure way to ensure defeat (and fairly quickly).

Things are not going well for the Ukrainians according to this US military assessment.
That article is almost a month old. HIMARS is busily blowing up every ammo dump on the Russian occupied territories. Even the arguably objective NASA fire tracking satellites which can show buildings on fire as a result of shelling have shown a huge drop off in the amount of artillery rounds being fired by Russia.

Death estimates on the UKR side are down to 30 a day and it appears Ukraine is preparing to launch a counterattack in Kherson.

Just rember the old saying about war and the first casualty. yes the article is a month old but the Russians in that time have gained more Ukrainian territory. plus in the last month have taken to attacks on Ukrainian cities a long way from the front line. The only optimistic spin on this to me is the Russians would be happy to stop with the Donblast as theirs and so are putting pressure on Ukraine to agree to this.
The discussion about the training of Ukrainian troops in the first paragraph ic truly concerning.

The NASA fire data is objective.
