Discussion on Ukraine situation 2022

Did you know that Australian govt funded TV station SBS still rebroadcasts pure Kremlin's propaganda channel NTV free to air and were doing it for last 20 years?
Well, today we stopped it. No more terrorist state BS here.

Includes information on size of each country's military (Russia, Ukraine)

On other potential flashpoints raised earlier in this thread, a potential China-Taiwan war seems to have similar comparisons based on size. The "unknown" question is to what extent the US has an interest in actually defending Taiwan (as opposed to sending defence missiles/materiel) or attacking China (best defence is perhaps attack???)

Singapore has a small military, but doesn't appear to have any "natural" antagonists at this time

to what extent the US has an interest in actually defending Taiwan

I thought the US was fully committed to saving the semiconductor industry (ie Taiwan).. am I wrong ?

Taiwan apparently at 7% - what makes them desirable?

Apparently most of the Chinese interest is in getting their hands on some of the peak semiconductor tech that keeps their military on the second rung.
The spin about reunification is all garbage, it's all about winning and holding the cutting edge of world military superiority.
Sadly I failed to save the links that expressed this argument ..so ….er…..ymmv… 🤷‍♂️

Just a shame that China doesn't have an F1 race this year or the Olympics weren't later.
Still have the Winter Paralympics to go from March 4 but I guess no one really cares much about that...

In oligarch news, Chelsea is now under the stewardship of a board of trustees (no longer 'Russian oligarch' Roman Abramovich - who is not yet under sanctions)

A brief article explaining the economic sanctions

China can’t just drive to Taiwan, which makes their problem somewhat more akin to Normandy than the blitzkrieg. Mind you, I’d be surprised at nothing, these days.

Expect substantial purchases of US military equipment by Taiwan to be approved by Congress. The other challenge for the PRC is marshalling shipping is very hard to do undetected.

Taiwan have long range strike missives something that Australia should be acquiring to protect our maritime approaches.

The marshalling of troops for this conflict was detected. How is navy different? Perhaps submarines can be undetected for a period, but the payload probably wouldn't be sufficient. Taiwan Straits is less than 200 km - it shouldn't take long for a naval vessel to cross that to land infantry.

Maybe a few nuclear submarines waiting in the Taiwan Strait will concern the CCP. They can stay hidden for months at a time…..and if the CCP doesn’t invade in the next 30 years, we can join the US, UK and France.
