re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

Within Australia anything below A$7/SC is good.
In the US some routes will come in under A$3/SC

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

Hi MEL_Traveller! Thank you for the warm welcome =)
My membership anniversary is 29 Feb 2016. I attained silver just a few days ago, Saturday 7.
I would like to visit Singapore before my membership year ends to visit my sister. That, or Anaheim to hit up Disneyland!

So one way to do it is to go to SIN via CGK. A mid-week J ticket BNE-SYD-CGK return will give you 320 SC for AUD2,134. You can get the remaining 55 SC with some cheap domestic fares and the 3K flights CGK-SIN.

If you go to the US, QF has a sale now to SFO for $999. Once in the US you can do some AA flights in F. (cheaper option)

Your knowledge is outstanding! Thank you so much for the suggestions, I really appreciate it =)

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

Would these proposed visits to SIN or LAX (Anaheim) be part of your $2k spend, or in addition?

I'm thinking SIN is the best option given the au dollar and so on as Disneyland is not cheap :)

Here's the thing.. Gold is nice sure, but what are your plans during the 2016-17 travel year (and then beyond?). If your big spend is on this proposed trip to SIN or LAX, do you only see a couple of trips (domestic or int) for the next year? If so, Gold may not be worth the extra spend and effort (and remember Silver will give you a Qantas Club guest pass if that's of interest to you).

If you don't intend much travel then Gold may be of limited value (obviously), but if you see increased travel then it could be worth attaining.

good luck and welcome to AFF

Thank you so much for your advice and suggestions, RichardMEL. Very much appreciated! Oh, and thank you for the welcome =)

Thank you for pointing that out. If they didn't charge such a ridiculous joining fee I'd consider it!

The most inexpensive semi-locally is likely to be MH sale fares in Business Class - Z.

Cheap tickets to CMB or BKK and then check the prices. 300+ SC from Colombo isn't too bad look for MNL/PEK/NRT as destinations. Consider if you wouldn't mind spending a couple of nights in any of those destinations.

Happy wandering

Hi incumbent!
I'd spend up to $2000, saying that I have no idea if that's a realistic figure.

Silver is good - business class check-in. Better access to seats. Priority telephone reservations (no 30 minute wait times!)

$2000 for the sole addition of lounge access (and a few extra points) is probably not a great investment. There are other options for lounge access - such as a $99 one-month membership of the American Airlines Admirals Club, that will give you lounge access to Qantas flights before singapore and/or the USA.

Unless you are planning to fly partner airlines (Cathay, BA, Japan Airlines etc etc)... going for gold is perhaps an expensive exercise for little return.

As MEL_Traveller says....

it's up to your own goals and what you hope to achieve. Perhaps if you can share where you see yourself going (pun intended) it may make things a little easier to help with suggestions :)

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

Any pointers for a run out of SFO and NYC area airports?

I'm thinking SFO-DFW-ORD rtn for about $900 USD and 360 SCs same day return, but open to new options...

That's not bad. If you don't mind starting from SEA (positioning with a cheap AS Y ticket from SFO), you can get 420SC doing SEA-CLT-SJU return for USD812 ($1.93/SC).

Edit: SEA-CLT-SJU-MIA-SEA can also be done for $812 in less than 25 hours

Can't find any SEA-CLT flights on the days I want (March next year), there's a 07:45 but it only runs on Sundays. I was able to find SEA-DFW-SJU mix of A and I class at USD$1015... and certainly can't get on the same day. What's the trick?

Ahh, ok missed the departing the previous day part. I found that date no problem, however I want toward the end of the month and into early April and can't get anything around that price point. Most are $1000+...

And the realisation of the flight timings - I think it would kill me :(

Well, the CLT-SJU flight is in a 330 with fully flat bed, so not too bad. ;)

2.5hours out of an 18 or so hour journey... That's a lot of AA's trademark (lack of) service in standard F!

I think I'll go back to the SFO-DFW-ORD rtn idea, seems more manageable and I can start at a more hospitable hour of 7am and get back by midnight. Only 360SCs but hey, I've got an NYC trip later in the year so may squeeze in another run.
