Re: Best Status Run Options - Questions and General Discussion

Well I would need about $1000 and 128k points.
And I picked up 100k points so far this year from 3x CC sign-on bonuses at $99+$150+$221.25 = 0.47c per point.

So say the other 28k at 1c/point to chase WP would cost me a total of $1750.25.
For 20 months of WP.

And the $150 was for the Amex ultimate which I also got a MEL-BNE return flight on which was worth $215 per way at the times and day that I flew.

The points may have 'cost' you 0.47c per point, but what do you value them at? ie that 100k points could get you one way business to LAX which would be worth ~$5k... add on your extra $1000 in taxes and now you're talking $6k to get/maintain WP... is that worth it?

Re: Best Status Run Options - Questions and General Discussion

$150! How?

$450 annual fee, 50k sign on bonus, complimentary return flight included.
I cancelled the card after 4 months and got a pro-rata refund of the annual fee, which meant $300 was refunded. Nett of $150.

Agree, some excellent points there. I've just put in 3 more CC applications which should nett me 115k points if approved. If I get those I will definitely go ahead as I can pretty much maintain my current points balance whilst pursuing WP. Most pressing issue is actually the time, would need to take two full days off work to do the required runs. See how it goes.

I guess it all depends on if you have any need/use for the points at that higher "value".
Couldn't you do the runs on weekend assuming there is availability?
I think you may need to be careful with your CC applications putting so many in such short time could be bad...

good to know they refund the fee pro-rata. yet to use my free flight on this card so will cancel as soon as I've redeemed it!

Yes but both cards I cancelled with Amex in both instances they didn't freely offer this information. I had to request it ("I believe I am entitled to a pro-rate refund of the annual fee") then they said they had to check with a manager, which they did. So I was put on hold for a bit then they came back and said all good and advised me of the amount to be refunded.

Also I wasn't going to use the flight. No need and no time, but then something came up which meant I had to go to BNE. So I redeemed that, and cancelled the next day.

I do not want to know what your credit rating would be like with that many CC applications...

Re: Best Status Run Options - Questions and General Discussion

That is unsustainable i.e. most unlikely to be repeated.

How would you then maintain WP in the real world sans CC sign-on bonuses ?

That's what I mean ! It's like a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to experience something I otherwise could not. Not only have I had a good run with the CCs, but I now also have a DSC offer.

I did not think CC applications would affect your credit rating ? More so if you've ever been behind or defaulted, etc ?
My overall credit limit in dollar terms is quite low relative to income as I almost immediately cancel once the points have been booked or a month or so after.

The number of applications very much affects your rating regardless of whether they are approved, denied or subsequently cancelled, three in a short space would often mean no more approvals for 6 months to two years depending on the assessor! Re: Best Status Run Options - Questions and General Discussion

Credit limit is one thing, credit checks and CC/loan applications are another. Lenders don't know if you've cancelled a card or not, all they can see is how many times you've applied for credit and doing so lots of times in a short period of time is bad, regardless of the fact you've never defaulted, or your total credit line is low.

Cheers, appreciate that. I don't see myself needing bank loans/financing in the forseeable future but you never know so thanks for the info.

Where are you based? Do you have any status credit offers (ie double or 50% one)?

One poster on Whirlpool has been refused credit for four years: Too many credit applications - Finance

I think what that Whirlpoolean is saying that he/she has been refused credit due to too many credit file hits spread over four years, not that a he/she has been refused credit for four years because of too many credit file hits at one time four years ago.

Regardless, you are very much correct, of course. In my industry (car finance), we deal with lenders that range from being "interested" in credit file hits over the preceding couple of months up to the preceding twelve months - pretty sure none really care about credit file hits (hits, not defaults / judgements / etc) older than that.

Has MEL-SYD-ASP recently gone up?
I'm trying to find availability as a Classic and it's coming up as 72,000 + $165 ?

Or has it always been like that but lower as a MASA ?

Just re-confirming based on a current data point (booked two of these runs today) - Classic J is 72k + $165, JASA still ranges from 48k + ~$380 up to 91k + $0.
