This is because the airliner was deployed into service halfway through a refit due to the Qantas issue.
Ah, OK. So what happens next? Do they remove IFE for everyone else?

Not all the seats have been replaced with the new black ones, the seats with IFE are the old blue seats - the new IFE is still yet to be announced, but is, "in the works".
Surely though, if they pulled the plane back into service, they'd already know what IFE they'd be fitting - and have installed it in "Row 3" and business class?
Do you have a source for this statement?
It was stated by a VA employee on a pilots forum
If it's the one i'm thinking of, that site is notoriously unreliable!

The IFE won't be a fixed solution or it would be in the seats/planes already!
As for being "the best in the Pacific" good luck trying to beat the SQ system or the NZ system with a portable solution
Portable technology is becoming more flexible and has the ability to store just as much content as the best fixed systems! Virgin America's red system is being replaced with seat back mounted tablets, unwired, with more content then the previous system. There won't be such thing as problems with IFE, if your tablet is not working it is replaced.
The one benefit IFE brings over BYO entertainment is the ability to use it "Gate to Gate". This seems pretty challenging with an after seat manufacture portable solution - would require very strong bonding to the seat backs to ensure the tablet doesn't not become a lethal projectile in the event of an accident.
The only thing that would really win me over would be onboard internet access....
lol it is a lil' dodgy hehe
Maybe a rep can confirm, not really worth their trouble but if they are around?
What's stopping the custom designed mount holding them in place?
FWIW, I think DJ are refitting to a budget and reusing exixting seats (row 4 back perhaps).

On the weekend, I had a refit BNE-MEL which were the old seats (row 7), still with ife but re-upholstered in the the new black (charcoal??) leather. I also had row 3 with the new (much comfier) seats in the new leather without the ife but I also had a refit SYD-OOL with the old blue seats, but J fitted (presumably one pulled back into service to suit the QF debarcle).
So if DJ intends to refit all the seats with the newies, why re-upholster them now?? That doesn't make financial sense. I'm tending to believe the new seats will be used on select rows only and the older (far less comfier seats) re-upholstered and refitted to the rear of the aircraft. They also must be planning to either keep the old screens with the new ife system, or have a fixed unit (or a fixed, mount/charger for portable ife) to cover the big bloody hole in the brand new upholstery!
