Do people ever get free upgrades as QFFF Gold?

I am not being as successful getting row 23 recently (and my PAs are instructed not to book 73x). I might have to rethink the 73x strategy...

Absolutely no upgrades ever for me...

I've been gold since November last year, but was silver before that for over a year.

I have however had slightly more success in other ways though

1. work paid for an economy flight MEL - LHR and therefore it was in an upgradeable economy class. I was successful in my request for an upgrade to PE, all the way through to London
2. I was flying back from SIN on a cheap economy ticket that was not upgradeable, however received an email while I was away saying that they would alllow me to upgrade for the normal points cost. I took it up as I was booked SIN - LHR - SIN in first, so didn't want to have to fly economy home...

So the secondary benefits of Gold do seem to be of value (ie the greater access to rewards and being higher in the pecking order for upgrade requests)

We had a lovely upgrade Singapore - Adelaide. The original flight was an Award one, for two of us (so Free anyway) then we heard that delightful ping sound as we scanned our boarding pass at Singapore. Hubby knew what that meant, I didn't and I just got stressed. But he had a big grin on his face. He was Gold at the time, and I was a nuthin - just a club member. We didn't have an upgrade request on at the time, so this was another freebie.

I've maintained Gold for some years on NZ... and Gold Elite a few times in that period... Never had an op-up (but then I usually put in for points/recognition upgrades on all long hauls so I'm not really giving them a chance ! Still.. NZ appears to be very good at RM... Rumour has it op-ups are vanishingly rare...)

One op-up (ever).. and it was on CX from J to F! (No status with Oneworld.. travelling alone seems to have been the trigger there!)

There are several different ways it can happen. At online or normal check in you can receive an upgrade. You can also be paged in the lounge and given a new BP. Lastly you can be beeped at the gate, that is, when the scan you BP it beeps with a warning. There are several reasons why you might get beeped, only one of those is a free upgrade. If you do get beeped for an upgrade they might have a new BP printed ready for you or else you might need to go to the gate desk to have a new BP printed.

I wanted to ask if anyone ever receives upgrades as a QF gold member?

If you refer to opups, ss a gold I have had two upgrades over the past three or four years. Once was from Y to PE on a MEL-SIN flight, and once was Y to J on a PER-MEL flight.

As a WP I've had about 6 DOM & 4 INT. Made WP about 6 years ago & all the upgrades occurred while I was a WP+ for 3 of those years.

As a Gold for the past 4 years, I haven't had any success with op ups; however I recognise that my flight profile (mostly Domestic) and fare profile (mostly discount Y with the occasional JASA) has put me out of the sight of the op up Gods.

Where I have flown International, it has been in Premium cabins (mostly J) however most have been on AAwards, so even though a lot have been on QF flights I wouldn't have expected any.

Have only had a couple, but last years was the best... upgraded from J to F coming back from JNB to SYD. Was Gold then, but was travelling with my colleague who was WP. Could definitely get used to F.

Also got one from economy to J the week before last from MEL-BNE, but only because the guy in the window seat spilt a full beer all over me, to the extent that I had to get changed!

Another wierd one.... my daughter and I are booked on YASA flights through SYD and on to Albury, and got an upgrade to J for the last leg of the return. Unfortunately had to change the flight and the J upgrade STUCK ON THE RESCHEDULED FLIGHT!?!? Awesome.

I am the third year silver......

I got an upgrade SIN-SYD by BA to PE during the flight which I hit Silver, i.e. I got upgrade when I was still Bronze.
Then I got no upgrade from QF ever, my main profile is SYD-MEL and SYD-HKG.
Interestingly, CX offered me an upgrade SIN-HKG even I bought an O class fare! Seems chance for QF international upgrade is minimal for Silver.

PS I have been told SQ does not offer any upgrade as they will control hard on not overbooking Y. They would rather fly J empty for potential last minute booking instead of taking too many Y. Anyone here can validate this?

Hmmmm interesting to note that since I wrote this post I've had two op-up's.

Y to J on CX from DBX to HKG and then last week on Qantas Y to PE from SYD to NRT.

In 2007, my first Intl' flight as a QFF Gold from HKG to DEL, Cathay upgraded me at the gate from Y to J. Thats been my only ever Op Up.

Twice as a Gold I was upgraded from PE to Bus on Sin-Syd and Lax-Syd. I have travelled on hundreds of domestic flights and never been upgraded and to be honest an upgrade on a short domestic hop means little to me.
