That's weird... my mum got her status extended for another year without even having to do any of the above. I was surprised she suddenly got an email about it.

I was very surprised too when I received the email extending my Silver status for 12 months, as I've been able to do sweet FA in the way of earning SC over the last couple of years. I haven't flown with VA since May 2021 (and that was only CBR-MEL-HBA), and rarely shop at Coles since we moved to Tasmania as there are three Woolworths stores that are easily accessible vs one old cramped Coles store so would have been lucky if I even earned a couple of SCs there, and I never transfer Flybuys points to Velocity either.

Got platinum extended for a further 12 months until June 2023. I was planning on taking a couple more flights to requalify but now may rethink them. Have to say I was surprised they would keep extending memberships for this long.

Any ideas on how to get this offer? My gold is expiring in July and I was planning on going to America in September. Would’ve been great to have gold extended to take advantage of the united airlines partnership

I don't think anyone knows how to intentionally "get" the offer - doesn't seem to be a clear pattern yet.

But you might be able to try a United match before your trip, this promo goes til 30 June and the status lasts 120 days.

Question : if my Gold is extended, will the extension apply to my mate, whom I gifted gold as well?
Re-posting this question.

The mate in question is on SYD-SIN-MAA on 30/04, return sometime in July 2022. Wondering will my Gold extension apply to her as well?

Unless your friend has received the same offer directly, I'd highly doubt it.

Thank you @TMP , you are probably right .. I checked with her last night and she hasn't received any extension. Rather an email from VA asking her politely to get back to the skies and reminding about the DSC promo extension etc ...

I also think her anniversary is in September, so she might, one could dream/expect, to receive an extension around July/Aug ... let's see

I would believe one more round is possible if they can't get some kind of lower hurdle or incentive in place. But anyone with status expiring in 2023 should expect to re-qualify the normal way IMO

Are peeps who got the original offer (Fly or 5k points transfer) getting confirmation emails that they’ve met the challenge?

Or are the emails mentioned here random comp status extensions?

It will be interesting to see what happens to the status qualification requirements if they don't recommence long haul international.

I'm sure many who are gold or platinum would have been earning a good bulk of their status credits and sectors that way, which is no longer possible. Without a couple of US trips per year I wont get the 8 sectors for platinum even if I fly with United and earn the required SC.

Not a bad point, but the qualifying hurdles for VA status are low, relative to the competition already (though personally, I think they are about right). IIRC qualifying sectors are flights marketed by VA only, so when the codeshare services start with UA that will see that problem solved?

Oh I thought you have to be on VA metal, I always got SC but never sectors for delta domestic flights even when booked through virgin. Hopefully you're right, in which case there's no difference.

Gold and Platinum tiers have never been easier or cheaper to obtain or maintain IMO.
Can maintain Platinum for under $1500 and Gold for easily under $1k

That could be true but my point isn't about cost of maintaining. It's about being able to maintain via flying long haul international or not. I know the vast majority of platinums would be regular domestic flyers but I'm sure I'm not the only one who isn't

I never stepped foot on VA longhaul. Always intended to but invariably plenty of EY and SQ J flights to Europe kept me VA WP for many years.

I vaguely recall getting a status extension last year but I am not sure about this year.

The 2 year break in travel was a good one. I'm too tired to commute. I've had enough. I will visit mum and dad every few months. Status offers very little. Lounges offer very little.

If I get another status extension in October then great, if not then not a big loss.

Ok. What have you done with the real @JohnK ?

I did the transfer and haven't received a notification or extension yet. My review date is end of June. I figure I'll just follow it up if it's not extended after that date.

You’d think they’d show the extension after you met the requirement. I’ve now transferred several points from e-Rewards and Accor (the later also got the 15% bonus) - about 8.5k so far.

If I don’t hear shortly after the end of the promo, I think I’ll try and contact them. My review date is Sep and I wouldn’t want to wait until then only to be disappointed.
