I reached out to Amex earlier today and they confirmed:

  1. Automatic with no registration required
  2. Supplementary cards included
  3. Not available on Platinum Edge (based on above comments, looks like it includes Platinum and up to Centurion)
I presume Reserve is also included ??

I didn't ask about Reserve, sorry.

My wife and I have Reserve free with Platinum (which has a better earn rate) and don't ever use it except for Amex Offers and Shop Small and the travel credit.

no problem , however since reserve is also a platinum assume it will also fall into category of double reward points

Fantastic news from Amex, will get some good use out of this for the next 3 months as now focused on earning Krisflyer points.

Good for you , however for someone like me who spends purely for personal expenses it is difficult to manage lot of swipes at this current time.

I need to find a way to justify the hefty annual fee :(

I push everything I can through Amex, routinely earning six-figure numbers of points per year (and planning to redeem them for airline miles against premium cabins, for value much better than 0.5c), so the value proposition remains good and in fact is improving for the next couple of months, assuming travel starts again someday. But if one mostly earned value with lounge access for economy travel and hotel status etc, then those are certainly impacted while travel is reduced.

Well I just have to suck it up and see if they offer anything more or cancel the card. With VA lounges closed , it does not help me a lot holding the card.

Prepaying a large tax bill is now an option. Tax deduct the fee and double points makes this worthwhile.

Hmmm, this has me now thinking..... I'm now effectively paying 2c/pt for Krisflyer/Qantas points - as I can reverse value 'trade' 1 FF point = 2 MR points = 2c off my statement...
An interesting dilemma.

When I was on the phone to Amex checking when my VA card annual fee was up for renewal so I could cancel it - they said there were a lot of people calling up to check their annual fees like me too.

Can only assume people are getting around to life admin, wondering why they are paying so much, probably a lot of VA cards are being cancelled and people not spending much realising Amex might not be wor it.

I reckon Amex will have to do double points for all soon

I was really busy and didn't notice that I was recently slugged with the annual fee (a month or two ago). Reckon there's any chance of getting some of it back given the perks of the card are far less than advertised?

Just cancel for the duration is my thought.

Could certainly make an argument for cashing out and investing the proceeds

Is it worth to use for international spend now? The conversion fee is 3%, I am thinking to stop using my BankWest card and push everything on Amex

"Could certainly make an argument for cashing out and investing the proceeds "

Funny - that was the exact thought going through my mind....

Keep 2.25 for future miles, use the other 2.25 to cash out

looks like I will switch back to paying for forex (for my suppliers) with amex and payment processor during these 3 months promo.
I've done the maths (can share if others are interested)
will cash out the entire points back out at 1pt=1c ($1=4.5pts)

can you share the match? I am paying for my suppliers in the US.

give it a go here, Amex Double double promo

just change the blue cells only, its freely editable so be careful.
I've done it for euros (my primary) but you can just change the exchange rate to suit

let me know if you find something incorrect
