All I can say is 'phew'. I got stressed just reading your posts so I can't imagine what it must have been like for the OP. Enjoy the holiday, if you didn't need it before, you do now!
 
I know you know best. but I was sure we did a renewal of my kids about 4 years ago. Maybe it was new applications but it felt easier that the initial passport application, well aside from the fact that some dufus didn't send in evidence of cutting the bits off the old passport for one of the kids.

It has only been in the last 2 years or so that you could renew a passport that was issued to a 16 year old.
What makes a child's new passport easier is their old passport to prove citizenship.
