DXB experiment concludes

Wouldn't most of them be ferried to/from LHR or SIN?

Well this one was ferried as QF6053 departed from SYD 24/3/18. While it may seem more cost effective to ferry from a closer airport, the requirement to "return" international passengers from an overseas port may be an issue as most international tickets tend to be sold as a return.

Most 380 MNL maintenance in the past anyway have seen the flights ferried from an Australian port though a few have been ferried from HKG.

Great news for me as it means Qantas is back on my list of airlines I can fly to Europe again as I have zero desire to visit or transit via the ME.

I love SIN for connections, iits the best airport to kill time in and has a great choice of lounges, and am looking forward to coming home via PER to see how that compares, i love the idea of late night arrival into Syd and straight to bed.

Also, if I never hear the phase 'We cannot do XYZ because you are on a QF ticket' again, I will be a happy camper...

Just about to embark on a Europe return on QF tickets, EK metal, what kind of things won’t they do because of the QF ticketing?

No, Oman Air isn't part of any alliance. For good and cheap J ( and in the past they have had some really cheap J fares), I'm OK with that.

I might consider Oman once I'm QF LTG but won't be MH

Friends were quite please with WY and they travelled in Y. Their next trip will have a stopover in Oman so they are looking forward to an interesting ME experience other than gaudy DXB.

Hubby and I have never minded DXB but younger son refuses to fly ME. It really surprised us. So the Qantas Sin pivot will work for him.

That's open to debate. I don't think EK does yield management badly, just differently. They're trying to maximise load factors and they often open up more cheap seats at the last minute when all other airlines have higher fares - meaning they get more last-minute bookings.

Keep in mind, they don't tend to oversell flights so much - they just oversell economy and upgrade people.

Badly if you're in the airline business, good if you're the passenger. Talking to software people on the inside, EK are seen a poor managers re yield management systems.

No thanks. The QF/EK alliance was one of the best things QF did for us in the last 35 years of flying with them. We like flying into DXB on QF/EK 380s. Nice 380's, excellent lounges, good connections to anywhere in the world in one stop from BNE.

No interest in flying QF metal, especially via SIN and will never fly Australia to Europe on QF 17 hour flights.

Even QF F is only a mediocre effort at slightly better J. We will continue to fly EK BNE_DXB-wherever in one stop. Next flights planned BNE-DXB-GLA, BNE-DXB-MAD, BNE-DXB-BLQ.

Unlike some we have never found the lack of bacon a limiting factor.

Well, maybe it was bad for me. Flying on EK gave me my first taste of flying F, and was a ‘free’ upgrade. Something Qantas never does for us.

Yes the EK b******s sucked us in that way as well. Very nasty of them to do that we thought! Never flown steerage since!:)

Have done DXB a few times, but can't comment on SIN because have never done that (not since I was 2, anyway).

I really enjoyed the DXB lounges. I think I didn't even find the F part for the first couple of stopovers - mainly quick ones where I just headed for the awesome smoking lounges. I never got "best value" out of the lounges, as DXB has only ever been a stopover for me between at least two long haul sectors, so between jetlag and already having ingested 24hrs of non-stop food and drink in prior lounges and flights, I have eaten very little there.

I seem to have had a good run in relation to delays - suffered one or two but not the massive disruptions that others have borne.

So in summary, in my view I may actually miss DXB. I was only ever there as either a J QF pax with P1 Flounge access, or an F pax on EK. So I only got the good. And I TRULY love the EK F method of travel. (The longest I have ever flown with EK in J is the BNE-AKL route and I hate the hard product.)

Doubt I will ever actually see DXB again - my points earn on QF which I used to use to get wondrous long haul EK F experiences are about to rapidly dry up ;)

As long as we can still book QF coded EK to go via DXB that's fine by me.

Yes you can and still have Qantas Club access to the EK lounges as well. Being in Adelaide, the QF ticketed EK metal flights are a boon to get to Europe with lounge access to boot as well.

This thread prompted me to look back at my TripIt data to see what impact the QF/EK experiment had on my travel.

Prior to the tie-up, I had only made 4 transits of DXB. Afterwards, 24.

Singapore - prior to the tie up, 30, afterwards 10.
