Get in and grab your high value fuel vouchers while they last...

As one that converts discount into points, there is only real value with the high value vouchers and taking as close to the 150L limit as possible. With the imminent removal of large discount vouchers suddenly there is vastly limited points earning possibility from the end of this year...

6 December 2013

The ACCC has today accepted undertakings from each of Coles and Woolworths that they will each voluntarily cease making fuel saving offers which are wholly or partially funded by any part of their business other than their fuel retailing business, and will in addition limit fuel discounts which are linked to supermarket purchases to a maximum of 4 cents per litre.

The ACCC has been conducting an investigation into whether fuel saving offers issued by major supermarket chains (sometimes referred to as “shopper dockets”) were causing a substantial lessening of competition in markets for the retail sale of fuel.

The Chairman of the ACCC, Rod Sims, said today: “I welcome the voluntary cooperation of each of Coles and Woolworths in addressing our concerns, particularly as they each maintain that none of their fuel saving offers breaches the Act.”

“The ACCC’s investigation was nearing completion and although we had yet to make a decision in the matter, our investigation had caused us to consider the competition effects arising from the fuel saving offers. We had focussed on the offers by the major supermarket chains of fuel discounts of 8 cents per litre, which were made for sustained periods during 2012 and 2013, and we were concerned that those offers could have longer-term effects on the structure of the retail fuel markets and also short term effects of increasing general pump prices in those markets.”

“We’ve accepted the undertakings because they address the ACCC’s principal competition concerns and allow the matter to be resolved quickly and efficiently.”

Some fuel retailers had complained that they simply could not afford to match the supermarkets’ fuel discounts of 8 cents or more, because those discounts were being funded from markets that were separate and unrelated to the fuel retailing markets. By removing the funding by supermarkets and limiting the supermarket offers to a maximum of 4 cents per litre, the ACCC considers that other fuel retailers will be able to compete on a more level playing field.

The key aspects of the undertakings include:

Coles and Woolworths may continue to offer fuel saving offers to their supermarket customers, but any discounts on fuel offered to supermarket customers from 1 January 2014 are not to exceed 4 cents per litre;
at their service stations, Coles and Woolworths may still offer discounts on fuel (including discounts in excess of 4 cents per litre), but from 1 January 2014, all fuel discounts (including those offered by the supermarkets) must be funded from within their fuel retailing operations (including associated convenience stores and other activities at their service stations).
The ACCC remains concerned about any other fuel discount offers funded by non-fuel retailing operations and any other fuel discount offers above 4 cents per litre which are conditional on purchases of goods or services (other than purchases at the petrol outlet). It will assess the lawfulness of any such offers made by other parties and take appropriate action to deal with any traders it considers are engaging in anti-competitive conduct.

Thanks shintaro10x - makes for interesting reading. Of course, I can see a way around the ACCC requirement from 1 Jan 14, so I'm sure Woolies and Coles can as well:

will in addition limit fuel discounts which are linked to supermarket purchases

I believe both have alcohol and hardware businesses ;), notwithstanding the final point:

Like we look for new ways to circumvent the systems to ensure we are getting the best for us, Coles & WOW will be doing the same. Those who refuse to adapt to the new playing field are the losers.

For example, who's to say that they won't do a JV with suppliers, where the suppliers are the ones who offer the bonus points to us and EDR are merely the conduit for putting the points into our account (on our authorisation)

I will still take the points as my local foodworks gives me 4c/L for every petrol upto 100L.

I predict there will be more points offers, and less fuel Discount offers going forward...

Hint for WOW for targeted FUEL offers from January next year:

Spend $50 at Woolworths Supermarkets for 5 points per litre when filling up at Woolworths Petrol Outlets (150L or 750 QFF Maximum)
Spend $100 at Woolworths Supermarkets for 7.5 points per litre when filling up at Woolworths Petrol Outlets (150L or 1,125 QFF Maximum)
Spend $150 at Woolworths Supermarkets for 10 points per litre when filling up at Woolworths Petrol Outlets (150L or 1,500 QFF Maximum)
Spend $200 at Woolworths Supermarkets for 12.5 points per litre when filling up at Woolworths Petrol Outlets (150L or 1,875 QFF Maximum)

More than one way to skin a cat (or the ACCC ;))

Very, very, very, very clever. I think you've seen a way around the issue. For me personally the points per litre won't be as good as the discounts, however I'll take what I can get. It would be nice if they'd give these points offers on top of the 4 cent discount.

I was thinking that they would offer more bonus points for getting fuel at WW/Caltex and this might be one of the tactics they try.

Got this BWS offer. I suspect I got the offer after i bought my Dad some cask wine (Yes brown cow, cask wine).

Meanwhile over here I'll continue using my £1/litre discount vouchers I've been getting from Morrison's ;)

Well I just fell off my chair :o

Just checked my personal email address and a WOW offer received yesterday at 4.13pm. $20 of fresh meat for 200 bonus points, valid from today.

The first time I have received this type of offer in over a year. I've been watching all of you jealously...;)

Okay, I'll bite :D - who doesn't need meat at Xmas and we've been culling our freezer. Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to WOW I go.....

Hmmm, noticed the final liner of the T&C's:

Pity, was hoping I could buy some Salmon. Red meat it is (or chicken)

I just received 100 bonus points for $10 spend on meat - will see if I can manage it, but I don't usually buy meat from WW, as I can get better quality meat from my local IGA.

All 4 accounts received the weekly treats offers, I believe I activated all 4, and last week I purchased the Red Rock deli chips on all 4 accounts. My account had issues so the discount was done manually.

Today I received a reminder there are 2 more weekly treats to go only on mums and my brothers account. Not sure what happened to the other 2 accounts.

Anyway mum is going shopping tomorrow and then on 17 December as well. The $30 is a good discount and I would prefer these types of offers than the fuel discount offers. And while she is shopping for the $30 discount she will be using #35 in gift cards from a previous promotion. ;)

$10 on fresh meat - 100 QFF

$50 on BWS (Spirits) - 250 QFF
$70 on BWS (Spirits) - 500 QFF

Looks like BBQ & Mojitos over the weekend

Mr Natalie received an offer for cleaning products. Can't remember the points but think it was a $30 spend. How do EDR know we have everyone coming to stay for Xhristmas and need to clean the house?

Nothing for but except a reminder to use my "two weekly treats" which have crazily high spends compared with what I actually spend....

Mum went to Woolworths this morning and spent $225 as part of the weekly treats promotion.

Why am I not surprised she left disappointed? She blames me. She was told she needed a voucher? What voucher?
