Egg tarts and Flowers. Portugal plus Chelsea.

I am enjoying your TR as usual. What is noticeable, to my eyes anyway, is how few people there on the streets in most of the photos..
We are in low season. High season in Portugal outside Sintra begins in July.
Now the view early Monday morning.

Mrsdrron wanted a rest day so I went out for a long walk. At the lifts I saw this out the window.
DSC01840.JPG

So I took the view from the other side of the hotel.

Somehow I think we got the better view.

I then set off first down to the large roundabout and down the Avenue de Libertade to the river. For the first hour there was a pretty cold wind. When it settled a perfect day with temp ~ 21C.

I decided to have a ride on the funicular. 3.8 Euros for a return trip. It was very popular. I got on the end of the line and got the last seat. Too crowded on the journey uphill but most got off at the top. I decided to stay on as I did have a particular place to visit to try their egg tarts.
So the empty tram and a couple of downhill shots.

And was the egg tart worth it?!

Now the start of the walk back which was uphill.

This square is no more than 250 metres from the first photo in this post but not on the tourist suggested walks.

Enjoying the trip report and details. Are there any music concerts around either classical or Fado?

Now to get to my destination it was via very narrow streets and lanes with absolutely no tourists. Several little eating establishments mostly featuring codfish. Most probably unknown to even Anthony Bourdain. I wasn't tempted though as noticed the customers and sometimes staff spitting on the floors.
Came to a slightly more upmarket area and there were more tourists. Then a little square that obviously served as the local Fire Station.

And just past this larger square was the original branch of the bakery I was heading for and indeed felt the tarts from ere were the best I had had.

Certainly saw many posters advertising concerts. Here is one place that has details.

The last of my walk. this was above a bar. Must have been a few happy endings there. ;)o_O

Though quite a few houses in the street had their washing out.

And that brings to a close this TR. A new cruise report will start soon.

These are the ones we bought. Coming from a bakery family, I stood for ages watching them make the tarts. Fabulous! And I LOVE the shop across the road, Vista Alegra fine porcelain. Use our beautiful cups and saucers regularly, even if they were the most affordable pieces in the shop! Well worth a visit.

IMO when in Lisbon it is totally worth going to Pastéis de Belém which is where the tarte was born. Easy to get to on public transport from central Lisbon with a tram stop across the road.

It looks small, but walk past the counter and there are multiple giant dining rooms out the back (seating for several hundred easily).

The castle was worth a visit, but I guess if you dont like walking it may be considered in the too hard basket.

There are also evening drinks and Fado walking tours which take you to smaller venues typically only patronised by locals to enjoy local wines, food and live music/dance.

Time now to get back to this TR as yesterday we left the Silver Moon and are now in the UK and ready for the Chelsea flower show tomorrow. It was a shock to have to leave the ship before 9am after 54 days aboard.
Decided not to have breakfast as the venues are all crowded on what they are now calling debark day. This time we took the Silversea transport to FCO as for the first time it was cheaper than arranging a private transfer.
First the last views from the ship.
