Re: Emerites fire DXB and evacuation procedure

Isn't the bags-in-overhead-lockers thing done to death? Are we flogging a dead horse at page 19 of this repetitive sub-topic flame war.

Any updates on new info about the incident?

Err no.

It's not about taking your bag. That's clear.

But should/can you even access your bag? Even one under the seat in front?

During descent etc., (if reasonably possible to do so), my view is that it's OK to access the bag IF it contains useful survival equipment for the given situation (e.g. warm clothing). There is NEVER a reason to access your bag during the evacuation itself - every 3 or 4 seconds that some d*ckhead spends trying to get their bag will prevent one person from getting out of the plane if something catastrophic happens.

I hope I'm never in that situation, but if you're between me and the exit and you're faffing around trying to get your bag, I will be putting my 20 years of rugby experience to good use - if that means walking over or through you, that's your tough luck.......

Re: Emerites fire DXB and evacuation procedure

It was back to pretty normal ops within about 36 hours. I landed there about 18 hours after it happened, and they'd already moved the tail section, and were in the process of lifting the fuselage. There are a couple of taxiways that are still out of service (basically where it ended up). The arrival ATIS had more reference to windshear than usual, but it was really just standard Dubai weather.

Thanks for the 'Coal face" update!!:)

Did the windshear advisory get added due to prior arriving pilot reports?

Re: Emerites fire DXB and evacuation procedure

One thing about the O/H locker/bag thing - that adminttedly probably has already been overdiscussed - some friends and I were talking about and concluded that perhaps in this instance, thinking about the route, there could have been significant amounts of cash being carried (and probably gold and the like too). Cash tends to motivate people to take risks in a way that perhaps other things don't.

If the seatbelt sign is on then it is better for everyone that all pax stay seated as unexpected changes can cause bags etc to fall out of the bins and injure others or you to lose your balance and injure yourself or others. Getting up in this situation is also risky to you and others

But the problem is the various airline policies for the seat belt sign. Some put it on (merely) as an advisory, others use it sparingly but when necessary. Some pilots forget to turn off the seat belt sign. Confusing for passengers.

If you are in the shower on an EK A380 when the seat belt sign comes on, no bags will fall on your head. I will not return to my seat in my birthday suit all wet with shampoo in my hair. Never!!

Rumour has it as well that the seatbelt sign comes on when the crew want some quiet time.

Feed the chooks
turn off the light
announce there is some "turbulence" ahead
turn on the seat belt sign

In that circumstance, I think we'd all happily consider you expendable.

I strongly strongly suspect Etihad do this. A lot. Can't say I blame them with the average passengers they carry!

Mostly on AA they just don't turn it off.

Same on China Southern and China Eastern. Annoyed me as I was waiting to be able to go to the bathroom. Until I realised that they would never turn it off.

But to me it lessens the meaning of the seatbelt sign. I might think it is on for a reason but someone else might just think that it is a recommendation.
